To all Keith bashers
Date: June 24, 2007 10:15

Hey, folks

there has been a debate recently about Keith able to perform. Apart from great You Got the silver, which does justify his ability to sing, just listen to

The solos are great and crisp (from 1:28).

Well, Keith has some off-nights, but he is able to perform without doubts.

Yeah but I must say Ive heard this solo a thousand times. It's not bad, just the same y'know.

you got the silver. what the heck, people are talking and Keith looks so lonely! But he sings great just wish he would drop those long "shh's" (his teeth?). His voice is great here actually. And Ronnie plays good, Chuck too. Maybe people could STFU when he performs. This is a song he could do at clubs, it's good. Listen to him at 2.20.

I don´t know who you are talking to if this thread is for keith bashers.
I respond anyway.
the solo on sftd is not bad as la forum said but if that is what you call great and if this solo is taken to convince somebody that someone plays great than that´s actually pretty poor.
Also has anyone any idea why keith doesn´t play guitar on you got the silver?
i have no idea!

My guess is this needs a bottleneck and Keith is not into bottleneck those days. Maybe simply of his arthretic fingers.

bash (bashing)

#2 is what it means -- (it's US english too)

–verb (used with object)
1. to strike with a crushing or smashing blow.
2. Chiefly British, Canadian. to hurl harsh verbal abuse at.

–noun
3. a crushing blow.
4. Informal. a thoroughly enjoyable, lively party.

—Idioms
5. have a bash (at), British. to attempt; make an attempt.
6. on the bash, British. working as a prostitute.

so to whom it may concern, please stop bashing Keith !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(although i have to say, I think bashing someone is a lot different from "criticizing" them in order to express real concern...)

Nah, it's mostly his recent inclination to fancy himself as some kind of torch singer...and lets him concentrate on delivering the song.
Nothing to do with playing ability. If he chose to wear a guitar for this song he'd only have to strum three simple chords anyway.

He'll be playing the bloody piano next ! ;^)

But he did play a bottleneck in this one in 1999 so you think now he'd just be satisfied with three simple chords?

stoneswashed77,

look, the thing with Keith is, it's all black and white only. black is he can't play at all, and white is that he's ferking great and probably better than ever. There's not much in between, like, 'just ok', 'quite good' - it's either totally bad or absolutely great.

You Got The Silver is a perfect example. Reading the reviews about 2007 versions so far would indicate that Keith reaches all time highs ("best ever version") every time he performs it, but, honestly, for me it does not sound that different from the versions I heard and experienced in person at shows since 1999 which I always loved. He is a bit more concentrated on his vocals since he dropped his guitar, yes, but overall, it's not like his vocal performance reached another dimension since then or is reaching new dimensions everytime he's performing YGTS in 2007 like some reviewers indicate. Just stating this will make me a "Keith basher" in the eyes of some, but, as I've mentioned, it's always black and white and nothing between.

Sympathy: It's my honest opinion that the solo work on modern-era Sympathy versions slowly deteriorated ever since it first appeared back in the setlist in 1989 after 14 years of absence. The Barcelona solo as shown on YouTube sounds ok = neither bad nor truly great, but nothing to write home about. But I must say that I grew up with the live versions from YaYa's and have personally experienced the 20 minutes version at Hyde Park 1969 (my first Stones show) as well as other 1969 and 1970 Sympathy performances. Then again, I initially really liked the modern-era versions, but by now Sympathy has become a more than pale shadow of its former self. The last show where Sympathy really moved me was...uh, Oakland 1999 (No Security opening show).

Good points there old dog.

And yeah, bring back the guitar driven versions of SFTD.
It's one of those songs that's suffered from their trying to make it sort of more like the original in feel and arrangement.
Works with some songs but not with others.
The original wasn't driven by guitars despite Keith Keith's stinging solos] but the song took on a great new dimension with the guitar band version typified on Ya Yas...and I prefer that.
They could do it like that now...if they chose to. It's not technically demanding at all.

Agree completely, Spud: I've got no sympathy whatsoever for what I've dubbed "Sympathy for Chuck Leavell." The menace, the danger that was once inherent to that great song is now completely lacking. I can almost see the lights of the Vegas strip when they play it now. My suggestion: either bring back a guitar-heavy version (hell, i'd even tolerate blondie shouldering most for the work) or drop it for another, still convincing warhorse: say, Street Fighting Man, or Gimme Shelter.

*and i'm just like that bird - singing just for you*

Yes, works for songs like Ruby Tuesday, but not quite as well for Sympathy. I honestly feel sorry for people who only know the guitar driven versions of SFTD from records and tapes, because this was indeed a case of a song taking on a great new dimension. By now it's computer-loop and keyboard-driven...so ferkin' predictable...lost all of its edge and danger.

>> Bible basher christlicher Fundamentalist <<

eek - that would be "Bible thumper" in my dialect. about the opposite of what i'd understand by "Bible basher"

but i digress, sorry! yeah, it's truly great that whatever was causing concern over Keith
sure seems to have run its course - now on with the impossible!

all kinds of blessings & well-being & on-the-job joy to Keith and all the Stones

okay, back to that youtube clip of the Barcelona SFTD -
since someone's mentioned seeing it at San Sebastian, i feel way more confident to ask in public:
is that the Dan Armstrong Keith has got there??

It´s sad to see him performing a track without a guitar.
Like Dylan these days.

I´m so glad that I saw him doing Silver in Stuttgart 1999
when he played a fantastic bottleneck. I never saw/heard him
doing this. I had wet eyes.

Look, Keith's playing of late just hasn't impressed me. A crisp solo? He plays the same solo pretty mcuh every song. I was watching the St. Louis show from '97 last night. Now THERE is when Keith is on fire.

Keith was still producing great solo's on Sympathy up untill the Bridges To Babylon shows. It's deteriated since and quite frankly, they are not very good now.

The solo in Sympathy in Paris was outstanding! His solo set was a mess.
