A Stones set-list after 1989 ;-)

I made a remark regarding "Out Of Control" and "Love Is Strong" in another thread that MY "wet dream" would be a show consisting solely of songs after 1989's Steel Wheels"

It got a few favorable responses so thought I'd see if I could make a thread out of it - hereby revealing my wet dream set list:

Intro - "Continental Drift" (I know it was done in 1989-90 and in Rio (?) - but I love it)
01. Flip the Switch (fire her up)
02. Sad Sad Sad (not one of my favorites - but one that everyone knows even if they don't)
03. I Go Wild (the third "wild" song)
04. Let Me Down Slow (taking it down a notch)
05. Rain Fall Down (still taking it slow)
06. Break the Spell (bring on the night)
07. Back of My Hand (the blues!)
08. Mixed Emotions (with Mick'nKeef at the same mike - ahhhh)
09. The Worst (the country!)(Keef)
10. You don't have to mean it (the reggae!) (Keef)
11. Out Of Control (This set's Midnight Rambler)
12. Terrifying (if only for that trumpet solo, nahh...love this song)
13. Low Down (slowly bringing it up again)
14. Hold on To Your Hat (going wilder!)
15. Love is Strong (bringing it down a notch)
16. Oh No Not You Again (bringing it up a notch)
17. Driving Too Fast (keep it on boil)
18. Mean Disposition (going for the finish)
19. Rough Justice (the modern day classic rock track)

Encore:
20. Saint of Me (this show's You Can't Always Get What You Want)
21. This Place is Empty (with just Mick, Keith, Ronnie and Charlie)

Tomorrow I might see it differently - but it is bid ;-)

It's not my favorite song either - but IMHO the set needs a fast song at this point - so any suggestions? (even more, that would make it four Keef-songs - not realistic even in a wet dream *lol*)

And now I got the solution - no Stones set list without Chuck Berry!! So maybe "Carol" here...or "Little Queenie" .....or....

AMEN! No one does berry songs like the Stones. I love when they do numbers by him.

smile: i liked your idea (on that other thread, wherever it was) of stretching it to include DW as well -
then your 4-man encore can be Had It With You - a beautiful way for the Rolling Stones to say goodnight to us!

you're missing about half the numbers i'd love but ... hell, i never post setlist wishes anyway. carry on :E

Ahhh...come on....make a list!! I'd love to see it ;-)

Yeah...but I think there is a line - or was that WW III?? - between DW and SW. But would love to have "One Hit To The Body" as an opener

"Had It With You" as the departing song to their audience? *lol* (But I would love the idea of either just Mick'n'Keef on a pair of stools singing goodnight to the audience or just the four-core....without all the entourage)

I think they should close with Streets of Love. Make it this big emotional ending. Right after Saint of Me. near Perfect setlist though.

Great idea and a big challenge for the band AND the audience! All of the above setlists are real good but Too Tight must be included - a barnstorming uptempo rocker, musically more interesting than Hold On To Your Hat and Rough Justice.

As long as none of the Stones originals are from before 1989 which I see as a kind of demarcation line for the band - their comeback if you will.;-)

And I wanted to throw some covers in there as well...but got caught up in the process ;-)

My point is that the Stones are just as much a band of the times now - even if their recent music do not rule the waves like we're used to. But that is not because of the music but because of these fragmented times.

I do not see any bands/artists that stand as a unifying factor - or catalyzing factor if you will - the way the Beatles and the Stones did in the 60's.

I do not see "Voodoo Lounge" as a pale reflection of what they once were - but as a mature masterpiece from a mature band. When that came out - I don't think there ever was a new record by any band, that I've played that much. Saleswise they were still on top of their game - if that is an indication of anything.

"ABB" is nearly up there - in playtime. Musically, I think this is a masterpiece as well, after the partially flawed "BtB".

I just got the "Biggest Bang" and find myself frantically looking for the live versions of the new songs. Just like I used to search the bootlegs that had most new songs on it. I remember the thrill of finding "Thief in the Night" on a bootleg - the thrill of "Out of Control".

That's what I really long to hear. And they have played quite a few - but not consistently enough in my opinion. They play them once or twice and then discard them for other new ones. What's the most ABB-songs in one concert? 3? 4?

Imagine what these songs could turn into if they stuck to their guns and played them over and over every night during 130 dates or more. WOW.

Alas - it is nothing but a wet dream. But quite a nice one at that ;-)

Add Like A Rolling Stone! A Stones recording from the nineties that verybody knows, so could serve in the Hot Rocks section of the show.

Great idea, I'd be there!

um, you forgot their two best songs of the '89 and onwards era: almost hear you sigh and moon is up.

I totally agree with this notion. To this day of the post-Tattoo You albums this one gets played the most. For me the only tune on the album that is mediocre is Suck On The Jugular. If you factor in the Voodoo Brew & Stew boots it was such a productive period for them.

You are welcome to your very own wet dream - a 20-21 song set of YOUR dreams ;-) (instead of whining over a fictitious set list *lol*)

Mofur,
I obviously couldn't agree more, on both VL and ABB. In fact, when ABB came out, I expected it to surpass VL, as I listened to it at least twice a day for 6 months straight, but then my wife and I hit some hard times, and I actually turned to one of my least favorite (and previously-viewed as overrated) albums, GHS, and you know what I discovered? That's a kick-ass album! Anyway, I digress. To this day, VL is by far - in my opinion - the BEST album the boys have ever put out. And it is an album that usually gets played more than once. Why just last week I gave it 3 consecutive listens, minus Mean Disposition (which wasn't on the cassette version, which was the version I knew for so long and wore out). To me a Stones record sounds best when Keef closes it out, even if his songs aren't always that good like B2B. The different instruments used on that album blow me away - a harpsicord! Who the F else puts a harpsicord on their record?! What a great sound it gave to the music!! VL is what made me a true fan..........and seeing them in concert on B2B made me an obsessed diehard! LOL

I also find myself be puttin' on VL most. In fact I do it more than, say, Some Girls. I really love it. They had to prove that Wyman wan't missed and they did it.

I thought this not very likely - but what if Van Morrison blows out Copenhagen too?

Then we might get Toots and the Maytals, and maybe Toots can duet with Keef on this one. No one says only Jagger can do the duets ;-)

This could be a real treat!

PS with sssoul: how about that setlist? ;-) (still headache? *lol*)

Mofur honey, i truly don't do setlist wishing - it's a matter of principle.
the band knows what works for them. the flow, the pacing, the staging, the bandmembers' preferences,
their strengths & needs on any given night, local considerations (eg No Expectations at Lisbon), the technical aspects, on and on -
we just don't know enough about it to be telling 'em what to do.

besides: i'd always rather hear what the band wants to play - any band.
and they are the Rolling Stones.
