Bring on the Punks!
Posted by: Edith Grove ()
Date: June 15, 2007 01:38

One of my favorite music genres. Oh, how I would like to have been at the 100 Club back in September 1976!

Are any bands from the '70s & early '80s still around and worth seeing or am I just dreaming?

I'd like to catch some of these bands before they're gone. How about some recommendations please?

Nikolai & Adrian L ought to have some outlook.
A real 77-er where I live wanted to call for a
"Punk 30 y o"-festival here, but didnt manage it.
There might be something next year;
withg Swedish & UK bands.

We have a pretty good festival already here as well:
Augustibuller (August Noize) Aug 2-4.

[www.augustibuller.com] Site in English

Location is Lindesberg 40 km or a half hour North from Örebro.
Nice little town with a perfect inland lake-beach 300 m from city centre.

n.y. dolls had a really good album and some well received shows last year...
david and one other original member i think...

i also enjoyed the 'filthy lucre' sex pistols live album circa late 90's...
was better and more powerful than i thought it would be...pretty brutal ear bleedin' wonderfully powerful noise...
sadly most of those bands are gone...but we'll always have LOCO LIVE...live in barcelona...by the fabulously fierce Ramones. r.i.p. Joey...

NY Dolls latest album was really good. I bought the Filthy Lucre Live album when it was released in 96, but I gave it to the library...as usual
It had some good sides....the guitars were cool,
but Johnny didn't do it for me anymore, and also, the thing about the Sex Pistols was that they were so outragous and arrogant in the 70s, while this 90s collobration seemed like "Rock" - missing the wildness of it all - just the music remaining...good effort - but didn't work for me

Any? Are you kidding?

The Slits - still sound great
Stiff Little Fingers
Radio Birdman - Seeing em next week in fact
X - ok...more like 80'...but should be in the RnR HOF
Patti Smith Group
The Stooges - ok...late 60s...but still on FIRE!
The Flesheaters - orig. line-up toured about a year ago - GREAT!
Agent Orange - 80s...ok
The Buzzcocks
The Germs (fine...Darby is dead...but he was all image anyway)
The Zeros - Just toured Spain/Italy

There are a few just off the top of my head. I know FEAR hung it up a couple of years ago...Sex Pistols seem to still get it together when they want some bread...but still put on a fun show.

Agree on both accounts. the "one for the road" version is awesome. good song for only being a b-side, seems to encapsulate what the kinks were about: witty sarcastic cynical lyrics.

I saw The Buzzocks a year ago(or was it two) and they were really awesome, played half of their famous singles compilation invluding such gems as Harmony in my head,Ever fallen in love,I don't mind,Promises etc..
Their new stuff was boring though but they got done with it very fast and then moved on to classics. They are really worth seeing.

Buzzcocks are still good live and making new music.

About the UK Subs, who made a couple of classic punk albums ,did you know that Charlie Harper is nearly the same age as Mick and Keith! I also once heard that Rod Stewart was Charlies guitar teacher in the sixties.

Pere Ubu are still great and making fantastic new music.Dont miss the New York Dolls if you get a chance. The Only Ones are great and touring again,, as are Devo. A lot of the old bands are still around, but Johnny Thunders,The Ramones,Joe Strummer and many other greats have sadly left us.

Dolls, OO, Devo & Ubu sounds like great tips... As well as Subs.

I watched Pere Ubu a couple of weeks ago. They blew up the house. So powerful.Ear plugs recommended.

Thomas, their front-man also made a couple of really funny and silly jokes about The Police reunion and Serbian victory at the eurovision song contest(well the gig was in Serbia).
