Since we talk in June 2007, i must say Streets Of Love is awesome. Maybe in June 2017 after another three studio albums I will let down...
Sway has a lot of epic content; add this to a very lazy tempo; it's what you get in the end...

ok I stand corrected

the only thing i find a bit intriguing in this otherwise funny game-thread with cops and robbers is that the cops dont give their own list... but stick either to correct others or to give lectures and definitions...

by the way, LIND makes me ballad winking smiley

Which songs are ballads - I think it's very problematic to define!

>> the only thing i find a bit intriguing in this otherwise funny game-thread <<

smile: i'm not a ballad cop, i'm just interested in what the word "ballad" means to people!
and i never do "best" or "favourite" type lists. but if you want me to mention some Stones numbers
that i consider ballads in the "casual use" sense of the word ... Lady Jane, Angie, Memory Motel, The Worst - how's that.

but it really does intrigue me, just in terms of language use -
the "rockers and ballads" division is pretty common in Stones fan circles;
earlier in this thread someone posted something that sounded like s/he sees a "rockers/ballads/blues" breakdown;
then someone else posted something mentioning "blues ballads"; and what is LIND -
an R&B ballad? sounds strange! but what is You Better Move On?? and so on.
clearly some people require a ballad to be romantic/sentimental and others don't;
some people feel a ballad needs to be slow, others are naming mid-tempo/fast numbers -
it's fascinating.

sounds good smiling smiley
so why the worst is in and play with fire is out?
to me ballad is a song not fast but with a kind of groove that makes you swing or weave or...sway that talks about the pains of love

>> so why The Worst is in and Play With Fire is out? <<

i don't know - i'll ponder that! maybe mainly because Play With Fire is so threatening,
and/or the smoldering heat of it doesn't fit my concept of a ballad, which should be more ... lovelorn than hot.
(i'm absolutely not saying my definition is any "righter" than any other, you understand!
it's merely mine.)

>> to me ballad is a song not fast but with a kind of groove that makes you

ahh thank you: so the tempo is part of it - no fast ballads?
can a ballad be funny? are ballads always about love, or would Hurricane (for example) be a ballad?

Play With Fire is not a ballad because it's not romantical, neither in the lyrics nor in the chord-changes. If Play With Fire was a ballad....well then you could say that Terrefying and Paint It Black were ballads as well

ahh thank you Erik - can you elaborate on that chord-changes part?
for me too the music - not just the lyric - doesn't fit my concept of a ballad,
but i would love to understand better why that is, if you're willing to explain

Very good question, Sssoul, eh,
Some chords seems to lift up some kinda emotions, either romantical or romance-in-vain-emotions - while others, like the chorus of Play With Fire is more of a statement or threat that ends in the same dark chord as it began with.
It has something to do with how the chords relate to eachother, just like the tempo (not necessarily "speed"), will decide if it's blues, bossanova or whatever
But YES, that's my take on it...the chords is just as important as the lyrics to decide whether it's a ballad or not.
I realize that I can't explain this properly, even though I know the different sounds in my head....maybe Mathijs, Beely or ChrisM could take over...

>> finally, skelly brought up 'always suffering' ...... puzzeling to me why

Out Of Control and Saint Of Me are definately not ballads, and I wouldn't call Anybody Seen My Baby a ballad either.

to me a ballad is about love, but not necessary of "good" love. Wicked or obssessive love are in for me the same. Romantic love for me is, quite ethimologically, also about hate, and above all: death. That's why Wild Horses sounds top on my list (and what is that a country ballad??)

That's why i would consider Play with fire as a ballad. Problem with that for me is the...length. I mean there's something in how much a "ballad" should last. Because it has to have (for me of course) a kind of breath in it. A span where i can weave with it. Make a slow dance (a ball-ad you know)

Dont know much about "Ballad chords" and i also would appreciate more about the item.

It has not to be fast but, to me, it has neither to be a particular slow tempo. That's why i consider Loving cup in the category (veeeeeeeery weaving!)

can a ballad be funny?
of course. Would stretch a bit my "concept" of ballad but Dear Doctor is a funny reversal love country ballad, isn't it?

more a i think about it the more i consider the danceability of the ballad a core quality. A ballad for me it has to move me, in every sense. Not rocking but sure a little, slowly, smoothing rolling...

....... i was not referring to, or remotely implying that control, saint, baby are ballads,, that they just make up bridges in my opinion, along with 'always suffering'.... ill attempt to be clear'r next time

Erik and Maumau - thanks for all that, i will ponder it a while!
but YaYas Rambler just came on and ... freakin ... transfixed me, then proceeded to
rip my hide off, crush my bones, set me on fire and steal my heart away -
so does that make it a ... ballad

If it steals your heart away, that makes it a ballad for you, I reckon!

And on the same subject, Torn & Frayed would be a ballad, but it's not a romantic song, so ballad or not?

To ballad or not to ballad, that is the question
