Posted by: Rockman ()
Date: May 30, 2007 08:06

Just released from Bad Wizard - Time Trip Vol 5 Scorpio TT5....

At last Key To The Highway and the funkier Mercy Mercy from
the November 8th 1964 Chess sessions...both in pretty damn fine sound quality..

Key To The Highway is rumoured to feature Howling Wolf on Guitar ...

Beg..borrow or steal from ya Gran's purse but just get ya self a copy...

That's what I was asking myself already...can't find it anywhere else, so unless it is a familiar song under a "new" title (Downhome Girl for example)this looks like another uncovered gem...

Also of interest is the question whether the other tracks like Goodbye Girl, Leave Me Alone and so on are presented in the same incredible sonic quality as Key To The Highway and Mercy Mercy - in this case they would be HUGE upgrades...

Just got my copy in the mail today (Saturday)

Holy outtakes, Batman!

I thought I'd heard everything from the early days, but this thing is loaded with newly unearthed stuff.

A crystal clear stereo of The Last Time, complete with a different mix in the guitar solo?

Two alternate vocals crystal-clear stereo versions of 19th?!?

Three 1964 Chess studio sessions tracks?!?!?

This is jaw-dropping stuff. Fans of the early Brian Jones-era need to run as fast as they can to get this. OTOH, if you sort of admire the early band, but what you really dig is A Bigger Bang, well, you aren't missing anything you can't live without.

I just want to add the thanks, this Key to the highway is for me the most important Stones outtake ive heard for many years. Anyone know more about the rumour about Howlin Wolf playing guitar?
I just played it back to back with "I put a spell on you" and "shake some action" it stands up smiling smiley wonderful

This is a great outtake, but I don't believe for a minute that's Wolf playing guitar on it. The lead guitar sounds like Brian's playing to me, If he's playing some barely-heard second guitar or rhythm guitar on this, well, it's possible, but it is not noticeable.

One thing's for sure: Howlin' Wolf did NOT make his name and fame as a guitar player. Yeah, he could play some rudimentary slide guitar, but Wolf achieved his fame for her ferocious vocals. Willie Johnson and Humbert Sumlin played all the great guitar licks on his records.

Anyone know more about the rumour about Howlin Wolf playing guitar?

Many many years ago read Stones/Chess recording article and
it mentioned Key To The Highway and Wolf in the studio at the time
and some guitar involment...Sorry no idea where the article is..and
if true or not who knows....Cant hear anything like Wolf on the track
and have never read any of the Stones mention it...There's only a few
guys who would know......someone should ask Bill or Mick or Charlie or Keith.
