"We wrote The Last Time when we had a few weeks off. Mick and I played around with it for days
because we weren't happy with the first title we thought up, which was The Last Time."

"This May Be The Last Time" is an old Negro spiritual.
which leads me to believe that the Stones must've heard it somewhere and swiped those lines for the chorus...

And Brian plays the slide but of course Mick taught him that line and so did Keith. Also Dave Mason played it on the record.

Yeah This May Be The Last Time is indeed an old spiritual
and "Pops" may have swiped it from the Five Blind Boys Of Alabama
who in turn probably heard it years ago in a some back-woods church somewhere....

As an after-thought The Five Blind Boys Of Alabama also do a fair
version of Just Wanna See His Face on their Spirit Of The Century album

right - it's the Staple Singers' version that they always say they lifted it from,
which is why i was glad to finally locate it. see [www.timeisonourside.com] again ...

I just did the chords on The Last Time. Brian's playing the main riff. I'm playing the acoustic and I also overdubbed the chords in the solo. Just passing chords.

Brian also wrote the riff?

depends who you ask, and how sure they feel that whoever played X must be the one who originated it.

The Last Time is a traditional folk song, dating back even to a Hawaiian traditional song from the 1880's. Brian did not write the riff, but he did transform it to this biting, aggressive riff that makes it this great song.

OK he wrote the riff but he shouldnt get creds. But Keith should get creds for JJF, a riff written and played for him by his bandmate, note for note.

Pop Staples also did it on his Peace To The Neighbourhood album.

Oo-er, the riff is pretty essentail to the stones recording, as important as the satisfaction riff imo. If Brian did indeed write it then, hmmm...

Actually, I think The Five Blind Boys etc. do a MORE than fair version (I've got in on one of the two Uncut CD's in honor of the Stones (Gimme Shelter - Vol. 1 and 2)

All in all 33 covers of Stones songs by other artists (Johnny Thunders: "As Tears Go By" and "Play With Fire", The Handsome Family "Faraway Eyes", Cat Power "Satisfaction" et al. Not to forget a hilarious version of "Honky Tonk Women" by Tom Jones - so bad it's almost good ;-))

And the riff sounds like a rough demo for Satisfaction, very similar.

Mathijs, how do you know Brian did not write the riff? The Staples Singers' version does not have this riff. That means the riff played by Brian in the Stones' version was purely original, unless there is another version of 'This May Be The Last Time' which I have not heard that has this riff. Thus, that leaves two potential authors of the riff: Brian or Keith. You're not telling me, Mathijs, that Keith created the riff and 'instructed' Brian to play it, are you? If so, where's the proof? Keith never claimed to have authored the riff, so that leaves Brian. He played the riff so we must assume that he alone created this incredible riff. If that indeed is the case, then The Last Time should have been credited to Jagger-Richards-Jones or Jagger-Jones!

Yes, the riff essentially is the basis of the song. Thus, the Last Time should have been credited to Jagger-Jones.

The melody and chords are the most essential, but for this song the riff is THE hook, same role as the Satisfaction fuzz riff.

I'm partially basing this on the recent Procul Harum court case in which the organist Mathew Fischer was granted a writers credit for his hook/organ part on Whiter Shade of Pale. The judge seemed to miss the fact that he basically stole it in the first place though.

Yes! So it should be a Jagger-Jones credit. To me, it's a slam dunk.

OK, that's a bit of a reach...

well, except that you have no evidence that Brian wrote it, or anyway you haven't let us know what evidence you have.
saying "whoever plays X *must* have written X" doesn't make too much sense to me,
and (sorry!) i really doubt it's your way of assessing things either, except where Brian is involved.
i mean: if we follow that argument, Keith "should" get a writing credit for the Stones' Not Fade Away.

I'm a musician and yes they are different but there are similarities, same chords, a repeated short melodic riff/lick. Not the same of course but still. A bit like Drive my car and Paperback writer or Day tripper. Same year.
