Woody's All-Time Best
Posted by: KSIE ()
Date: May 5, 2007 06:30

my pick: disc 4 Handsome Girls, track 6 "Lies" Think it's Houston, but too lazy to look it up...

Ron is screamin. Layin lead lines all over the place. Never heard him sound this good with the Stones.

runners-up: YCAGWYW 75, Hold Back (luv that tasty little solo), Hand of Fate (is that him?)

What think yous?

"Stay With Me" with the Faces.
Beast of Burden on Handsome Girls ... Don't remember which show/disc, but his solo there is impressive.

His solo on Gimme Shelter from L.A. 13 july is probably my favorite. Also loved his slideing on All Down The Line durin the concert in Bergen last year,he was on fire.

Anything on LYL. Maybe it's mostly overdubs from him, yes, but the man played like the devil on that record. The film Lets spend the night together. Highlight: Little T%A. That's one of those solos only he can do, meaning he really follows Keith and "weaves".
Shattered is another example. Both live and studio.
Taylor was good on Brown Sugar but Ronnie is better imo, at least the LYL version.
His riffs are superb. Hey Negrita to name one.

I thought he skipped the bottleneck because of the rain??? My first reaction on his leads there was: Hey, Woody´s playin´All Down The Line without a bottleneck. Are you sure? Maybe my ears failed me...

"All down the Line" I THINK it is the "Stripped" version.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

On the rare occasions in which the band did "Black Limousine" (1981, 1995) Ronnie's playing was stellar. Listen to the version on "Stripped Companion". He was the featured guitarist on the track. I wish they would bring back this gem.

I don't know what his best is. I have no favourite, but right now I love his slide on Rough Justice.

When the Whip Comes Down on the 78 tour was a rough bitch of a ride... i love the way Woody and Keith interacted on the soloing...but hell, Woody was soloing like a bit of demon..very punky and raw

(OT: Charlie's drumming on this particular track was also superb)

Copied his Essential Crossection here:
From his solos I`d say his singing and playing is on top level in Far East Man

Disc: 1
1. I Can Feel The Fire - Ronnie Wood
2. Cancel Everything - Ronnie Wood
3. Far Est Man - Ronnie Wood
4. Big Bayou - Ronnie Wood
5. If You Don't Want My Love - Ronnie Wood
6. 1234 - Ronnie Wood
7. Fountain Of Love - Ronnie Wood
8. Seven Days - Ronnie Wood
9. Always Wanted More - Ronnie Wood
10. Breathe On Me - Ronnie Wood
11. Somebody Else Might - Ronnie Wood
12. Josephine - Ronnie Wood

14. Whatdd'ya Think - Ronnie Wood
15. This Little Heart - Ronnie Wood
16. Little Mixed Up - Ronnie Wood
17. You Strum And I'll Sing - Ronnie Wood

And his work with different bands leads me to decide between Stay With Me/Faces or Black Limousine.
I´ve seen the Stones four times and at his best moments he can nail Shattered, Respectable, Street Fighting Man and so on..

Disc: 2
1. You're On My Mind - The Birds
2. You Don't Love Me - The Birds
3. No Good Without You Baby - The Birds
4. How Can It Be - The Birds
5. Midway Down - The Creation
6. The Grils Are Naked - The Creation
7. I Ain't Superstitous - The Jeff Beck Group
8. All Shook Up - The Jeff Beck Group

YCAGWYW The Hague, 29 May 1976. Great playing, Keith drops out and then subtly it all builds to a climax.. don't know why this hasn't been picked up on more often.

Best heard on the 'Lips' vinyl boot, the VGP 'Any Port In A Storm Revisited' isn't as good to my ears.

All of the YCAGWYW solos from the LA Forum gigs were provided to me by a good mate. Every night the song got longer and longer, till it stretched out to nearly 15 minutes. However, the heartfelt and magnificent solo from July 10 stands out, and it still nearly brings tears to my eyes. It's a treasured part of my small bootleg collection.

As Rockman stated, Ronnie reached for the clouds and hit them. Nice choice of words, man.

Orbit thanks for the tip...I'll look for that boot. I really love 75/76 YCAGWYW's, if even only for the solos. Kind of how I like any MT era Gimme Shelter for the solos at least!

For those who don´t know what we´re talking about:

It´s not ony the solos, it´s also all the leads in between...
mind blowing stuff!

Woody is definately underestimated as musican and as a songwriter as well, that's my opinion.

There is this tribute (http://www.kuriouskurt.com/news.php) out with very good interpretations of his songs and intersting guests. And it really shows that he's a great songwrither as well. The following songs are on the album:

1. Outlaws (Wood/Ford) 3:57
2. Far East Man (Harrison/Wood) 4:49
3. Ooh La La (Wood/Lane) 3:38
4. Whadd'ya Think (Wood) 4:02
5. I Can Feel The Fire (Wood) 4:18
6. Forever (Wood) 4:03
7. We All Get Old (Wood) 3:51
8. Breathe On Me (Wood) 5:30
9. It's Only Rock'n'Roll (Jagger/Richards) 4:29
10. Always Wanted More (Wood/Fowler) 6:17
11. I Got Lost When I Found You (Wood/Womack) 4:43
12. Hypershine (Wood) 3:31
13. Little Girl (McLagan/Wood) 2:46
14. Hello Old Friend (McLagan) 3:50
15. Pascal Talks (Kravetz) 1:41
16. Alan Talks (Merrill) 6:29

It's worth to have a listen on the website.

Thanks Wizzard, looks like an interesting disc.

It wasn't until I got the Faces' box set that I realized (or remembered as the case may be) what a vital part of the Faces RW played. His guitar and songwriting work really led the band.

The intent of my post though was really for Stones' work, and lots of good opinions here. Nobody else like that 78 Houston "Lies"? (think now it's actually disc 3) I almost don't believe it's Ronnie everytime I hear it. Great sound, great screamin notes. Excellent!
