My guess would be both, but I've seen it written that he was "in the audience".
Never seen a photo of it, even though I've looked around, I guess he found a quiet spot in JFK Stadium.

The rain isn't an effect, it was really raining. They have performed in the rain many times, it apparently doesn't bother them much!
