"Love You Live" Appreciation.

While the first CD isn't as good as it could've been, the second CD really kicks ass. The El Macombo part is awesome of course (The Keith solo in "Around & Around" OMG!!!). The second set of songs is great too. They're really on fire here. It's kindda weird that the only live albums they ever released that does their live sound justice is GYYYO and LYL.

Still Life? Flashpoint? IMO, both very representative for their live sound at the time.

if i remember corectly, someone mentioned here, that flashpoint was seriously overdubbed?
LYL is quite good.

They're all overdubbed. And quite rightly so.
Bum notes and mistakes don't matter live... but start to annoy on repeated listening to recordings.

never understood the latter-day enthusiasm for this record. Aside from the El Mocambo songs which are magnificent, I find most of it almost unlistenable, with Jagger's singing the absolute low-point of his career and annoying on repeated listening. And thats despite the numerous overdubs it took. It was badly received at the time and 30 years of hindsight havent been enough to reassess it favourably for me

strange because they recorded so many shows and the tapes indicate there were some worthy performances - epecially in 1975. 1976 is my least favourite Stones tour.

Still Life and especially Flashpoint have only a fraction of the overdubs that are on LYL.

A couple of photos from the 'Still Life 1981/1982' Tour taken on 26th June 1982 at Wembley Stadium. Long before digital cameras, taken from amidst an audience that wouldn't stay still! Hence poor quality.....

Post corrected....so now not so relevant to a 'Love You Live' thread!

It's wierd that the only Stones live album featuring 70s material, is from the 76 tour....their least good tour that decade, I guess
Yet, I digged Love You Live when I got in the early 90s. But now, I tend to listen to the 75 boots instead. But Side 3 is excellent, and some of the 76 performances on LYL are really good, I like the entire side 4....there's only 2 songs on that side from 76. The Paris 76 boots is far better than side 1 & 2 though.
And I dig the coverwork.

That's not the "Love You Live Tour" ManOfWealthAndTaste. That's the 1981/1982 World Tour.

Side 3 is only relatively good - beacuse the rest is so poor - compared to previous high standards.

Compared to current form however, LYL is a masterpiece. Question of perspective.

As Gazza says, they were highly berrated at the time. Their nadir.
You sort of take what you can get from mid-sixty something gents - but for Stones in early thirties - these were poor shows. Yes, believe it.

Love You Live is mostly dreadful. Almost as piss poor as No Security. I never play it.

I never cared for NS...but LYL captures the spirit of that time.

BS simply rocks, Ronnie sure could fly in his day!

Even though JJF is fast and ragged I love Ronnie's riffing and leading over top of Keith. One of my fav. versions guitar wise.

In 81', Maybe Ronnie was screwed up and/or Keith sobered up enough to see himself as the rock star but Keith plays more leads on song he never did and Ronnie sticks to the rythmn more. sadly.

Star Star, Cracking Up, Sympathy; the most obvious re-recorded Jagger singing on LYL.

Keith's solo on Around and Around; call me crazy, but I don't understand how imitating Chuck Berry - and that's all he's doing - makes people go apesh*t.

Because he does it about 19954929559201144 times better than Chuck Berry (Without exaggerating one bit).

I agree! That's why I love the whole side 4. Even though 76 was not a really good tour, those 2 numbers really cooks, IMO. Even Jagger does a great job on those 2 (and of course IORR and SFTD).
But the original, unedited SFTD from LA 75 is helluva more fun than the reworked version. Same goes for Fingerprint File - Toronto 75.

I can't find words for that statement.

I bought the double album when it first came out....it was good party music.....I liked Fingerprint File and Hot Stuff......Jagger's voice was abysmal, but hey who am I to care?

"Spirit" being the operative word - Jack Daniels, smack and cocaine.

My fav part of LYL is the intro. It does it for me every time. I love hearing it in French and as far as I,m concerned the intro bars of HTW can go on forever. And of course the banter within. Ol bums rush Jagger here, courtesy of Ron. LOL
