Drift Away

I'm listening to this song at the moment and i think i am in love with the song. can anybody give me some extra info about the song. I've been looking for some other versions on youtube, but i think the stones nailed it. I can recall a topic about special stones endings like "fool to cry" and "Melody". You can put this in the same kind of endings....

I heard it was leftover 1973 recording session tapes...too bad they don't play that one live on the B-stage huh? It would be a real treat.

well ... extra in addition to what?
Mentor Wiliams wrote it. (lots of sites list Dobie Grey as the songwriter, but it's not his work.)
apparently a version that runs too slow was in wide circulation for a while, but the corrected one seems now to have taken over.
it's said that this was left off IORR because they wanted only one cover tune, and Ain't Too Proud won out -
at the time Drift Away was of course a very recent hit, which may be enough of a reason for the Stones to skip it.
i love it, including the fact that Mick sings "give me the beat boy", not "boys".

Nice version of Dobie's hit. I like the fact that Keith doesn't try to copy Reggie Young's guitar work note for note (many think this is Steve Cropper, but it's not). Gives it a Stones flavor.

until mickboy corrected the speed on his reissue project, the song had played waaaay too slow on every boot it had appeared on previously. it's a nice listen but doesn't hold a candle to the original nor to rod's version, for that matter....

BTW, Dobie does a great cover of Dr. Hook's "Sharing The Night Together". No bullshit! Much more soulful than the original!
