Get Off Of My Cloud

Just listened to this one..again, the 75 version,
it strikes me how FUNNY and absurd the lyrics are.
About a guy living in the 99th floor...Mick shouting "Hey hey yo yo get off-a my clouuuud", especially funny in certain versions, Fort Collins for once, with "sometimes I say hey" [guitars&drums: BAM] " Sometimes I say hey" [BAM]...and after repetition of that theme...Mick goes "sometimes I say ----[really fast talking...can't hear what he says]---anything I want!"....
before it's back to "Hey hey yo yo get off-a my clouuud"
I just find it strange that Jagger or Bill Wyman don't start laughing in the middle of the song, even I do, and I'm a crabby guy...and sober too.
Lamp post warning...but it's too late

I love the 75 version of GOMC. I remember when I played it for my roomate and he asked "Is this a cover song?" It was like a cover, but they were covering themelselves.

Love both versions...75/76 version is a stoned-funky firestarter.

Did you mean to say Billy Preston Erik? I'm trying to figure out how Wyman would fit into that thought.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

The song is now featured in a Hallmark greeting card.
Open the card and hear "Hey Hey, You You..."

Thanks for replying, boys and girl,
the chorus just stroke me as more hillarious than I imagined it to be,
I love that song.

>> Did you mean to say Billy Preston Erik? I'm trying to figure out how Wyman would fit into that thought. <<

No I meant Bill Wyman, as he's a relaxed and ¤observing¤ guy on stage. Keith Ronnie and Preston are so into the performance, that I don't think they reflect over the words Jagger is singing.

It's easy to think of the text of a song like "the way it's supposed to be", instead of thinking about what the lyrics actually says.
And Get Off Of My Cloud is absurd and wild, almost like some of Dylans lyics..especiialy in 64-66..songs like Subterranean Homesick Blues and From A Buick 6, songs which can describe something, which is hard to grasp at once, untill you suddenly the fun in his reflections.

So...somebody has an idea about the theme in Get Off Of My Cloud ? I got some ideas of course, but I can't put it into English words that easily.

Come to think of it, Bill WYman has that "WTF..this is funny"-look in the Get Off Of My Cloud promo-video (Ed Sullivan?) from 1965.
Maybe I had that footage in mind.

it's a very Dylanesque lyric indeed, including the outlandish numbers of syllables crammed into each line
(i have my own theory about where that comes from, but it's probably best to leave it for later)

Yes, that's the one. There's short clippings of that performance in the Time Is On My Side video from Still Life.

This was my first favorite stones song, as a young lad.

The theme is similar to "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," except that mick here is so alienated that he's not even interested in sex anymore. Mainstream life is hopelessly square, boring, even repressive. "Society" doesn't understand youth's problems.

That is one of the funniest clips of early Jagger; that bizarre dance. LOL What was he on?
To be honest, this has never been one of my faves. IMO the song gets better in historical perspective;that they subconsciously put their world into those 3 minutes. A bunch of speed, moving around a lot, Dylan influencing everything. Then you try to sum it all up in a catch phrase. One that never really caught on. Except for Dan Akroyd's Tom Snyder.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

some music critic a long time ago noted that one of the striking things about Stones songs
was that unlike other songwriters of that time & genre, they didn't turn to romance
as a refuge from/antidote to social injustice. being a misunderstood rebellious teenager was fairly commonplace,
but the Stones were different in that they weren't comforting themselves by falling in love.

This tune rocked on the B-stage on 1/20/06. First time I ever heard it live.

Love this one. Thought it was great on the small stage on the ABB tour. Charlie was taking over the building!

Well is was a song atypical of the era, the 1960's...
The hazy dazy crazy 60's mannnnnnnnn....
It was a drug song.
The Stones don't make drug songs any more.
Perhaps they should start making drug songs again?
