I am interested in checking out soem good German bands. Not old involved like Amon Duul or Can, but also not lousy overly commercial. Eg I don't even know the Toten Hosen yet. Should I check them out? have heard only great stuff re. Campino. Are there others that rock well, yet stay true to their heritage?

Although I'm from Germany, there is no German band, I really like. Beside "Tote Hosen", there is "Herbert Grönemeyer" (uarrrrgh), "Rammstein" (terrible), "Tokio Hotel" (for little girls), "Fantastische Vier"...
Ton Steine Scherben (they don't exist anymore) had a very "stonesy" sound. Rio Reiser (singer of TSS) Nina Hagen Band Einstürzende Neubauten Jule Neigel Band
and some good punk-bands in the 80s (like KFC, Slime..)
But I don't know a recent band I like... maybe Stoppok...

perhaps You could give some information what kind of music you like (except of Stones for sure)
You really should try BAP. They did (and still do!) some amazing music! Maybe the most popular German band in Germany itself. And they even played as a warmup for the Stones... I think it was in the 80s! I love them. I've seen them live last year and I'm gonna see them again this summer.
Btw, Wolfgang Niedecken (the singer of BAP) really IS a big Stones and Dylan fan. I've seen him with his daughter at the Stones' Cologne concert last summer! ;-)

BAP opened for the Rolling Stones's last show of the BtB tour in Cologne
In recent years the best German music has not been rock n roll, but there are many interesting electronica outfits who continue the legacy of Can,Neu,Amon Duul etc. I would recommend Mouse on Mars,Porter Ricks and Gas. If you want to go further back Die Haut and Malaria were great in the eighties.
Commercial rock like BAP,Gronemeyer and wimpy indie stuff like Blumfeld,Sporfreunde Stiller etc is all pretty poor in my opinion, your better sticking with the Strokes,White Stripes etc.
A couple of people mentioned Einsturzende Neubauten, if you are at all interested in poetry and modern German history, this band are fascinating and although they have been around for nearly 30 years, the last 2 albums are amongst their best. The singer of this band Blixa Bargeld is an important artist in Germany and often a very funny interview partner on German TV.
Die Totenhosen are worthless commercial garbage, although people have a soft spot for them because they supported rock n roll greats like Johnny Thunders and the Adverts when they were on the skids.
Kraftwerk are also tired, they take about ten years to make a record, they claim its due to perfectionism, but more likely they ran out of inspiration.
Some of the world's best electronica is coming from Deutschland. Not big into it myself but a couple friends love Thomas Brinkmann (spelling?).
Agree that Kraftwerk has suffered from a lack of new material, but their last tour and live CD/DVD were excellent. Vierzig Licks, so to speak. Saw them at the Berlin Tempodrom, the Mitternacht show. What a collection of people!
...and nobody mentions Udo Lindenberg?? He did some real good stuff in the seventies and most of the eighties! You have to listen to his stuff if you want some great german music!!
