Honky Tonk Women isn't from Memphis, you got the bootleg-bibles to check sources for, if you don't have the tapes/the time yourself, like the great works of Dieter Hoffmann.

Out On Bail...Street Fighting Man ends after 2 minutes or so, it's spliced in with an audience source after that.

Well done Erik! Thank you.

I thought that about Honky Tonk Women was from Memphis because if you hear it through headphones you hear the crowd react to the "...in Memphis" line in a way that would make one think that it was in Memphis--pretty thin to be certain, but since I knew they recorded Memphis it seemed possible.

Oh, Ok...my versions of Passaic never had Street Fighting Man, but I am well aware of the story--always figured that the spliced in audience was from the same show.

Anyway, as a huge '78 fan---appreciate the answers.

Use Audio Hijack to record. Great program and cheap! Can also remix.

Yes I did a quick comparison with my audience source. The real marker is the Mick Houston intro as described by Joss.

I didnt mention the bootleg CD, GS. What I was referring to was the existence of complete 1978 shows circulating in soundboard form - the only one that does is Fort Worth. Passaic is complete "except for a few minutes" because the last song (Street Fighting Man if I remember right) is cut - the story is that apparently the roadie who was taping it was almost caught doing so and had to eject the tape quite abruptly. versions appearing on bootleg CDs have had that song patched together with an audience source.

whats an "AR" recording? audience? broadcast? If its a broadcast, I think that LP merely consists of the songs perceived at the time of release to come from Detroit. There's absolutely no doubt that the version of HTW on disc 3 of Handsome Girls thats supposed to come from Detroit is different to this new recording

and it doesnt sound very
> well...but its a great incomplete boot...with a

oh it is. Just listen to "just my imagination". Memphis, lexington, Detroit and Houston were all taped for radio broadcasts and parts of each were broadcast. There are however audience recordings of each show in variable quality as well. They'll be the most conclusive evidence.

I presume this is the cover of 'Abandoned in detroit' you mean :

its not unusual for KBFH to use a spoken intro or between song dialogue from a different show to the one that preceded or follows it. same with official releases too

Erik, or anyone,

What exists from the show 2 days earlier on July 4 1978 at Rich Stadium in Buffalo NY? This show I attended. Being that it was on the biggest American holiday was a huge party atmosphere I would imagine if the "hit it" on July 6th they were throwing the punch on July 4th.

There is a poor audience recording of Buffalo 78 in existence.

Wolfgang's Vault's "concert summary":

In the last 20 years, the Rolling Stones have done their legacy something of a disservice. Swaddling the back-alley, whiskey-and-opium menace in Vegas-style pomp and gloss has tarnished the memory of the Stones in their prime. And not in an “I-can’t-believe-they’re-still-at-it-at-their-age-how-embarrassing” sort of way, either; the dismissive ageism is a crutch for those jealous that a bunch of sexagenarian Englishmen are having more fun than they are. What’s missing is that element of chance – that harrowing feeling that the whole thing might just crumble before your very eyes - for it was on this precipice that the Stones staked their claim as The Greatest Rock ’n’ Roll Band in the World.

In a career spanning four decades, losing the plot is nothing new. The Stones first began to stagnate following a series of classic albums in the early ‘70s. Curiously, it was the New York City club scene that brought them out of this slump. 1978’s Some Girls was a timely release, reclaiming some of the glitz and grit missing from their mostly forgettable mid-‘70s efforts. Mick’s boogie nights at Studio 54 translated into a massive chart triumph when combined with the sleazy blooze bravado of the prototypical Bowery punks, Keef and Ronnie, and the ensuing tour may have been the last time the band married a creative peak to commercial success

This show, recorded during the ’78 tour, is a reminder of how it should be. The Stones’ strength is making a 4,000 seat theatre feel like a sweaty, smoky, beer-soaked juke joint, and they achieve it here. At times it’s loose and ugly, but that just makes it so much sweeter when they get it together. The more “modern” likes of “Miss You” and “Shattered” stand up against classic material such as “Tumbling Dice.” If Mick sounds a little out of breath, just picture him shimmying back and forth across a 100 foot stage and ask yourself if you could do the same and stay in key. This ain’t the opera - this is rock ‘n’ roll at its raw and bloody essence!

The Stones’ are still great, still packing in massive venues around the world, but their enduring success is built on an unsteady foundation of rough-hewn and raggedly perfect music. For all the rollicking, shambling glory, minus the smoke and mirrors, listen here

I only know for a fact that tracks 1-5 on disc one ARE from Ft. Worth -- I have the videos of these. Also, "Hound Dog" is definitely from Memphis.

So, how accurate is this list?

Disc 1 & 2 are all Fort Worth - the songs that are repeated on disc 2 are just filler (a 'different mix', apparently)

The KBFH material is on disc 3 and 4, taken from the master tapes before they were broadcast

Ok, Gazza, this is the boot that I have (and one of my prized possessions). So, you think the venue list I posted is accurate?

Re: Detroit 78 up on Wolfgang's Vault

well thats the 'accepted' source of these recordings according to all the records and websites. I would say that most of the info on discs 3 and 4 is correct

And thats the whole argument here in this thread...as some people think some of the songs (especially those at the end) are detroit and not Houston, if this new recording on Wolfgangs Vaults is accurate. As I mentioned earlier, we'll have to dig out the audience recordings to settle things properly,.

What do you all think the chances of these vaults containing previously unreleased video material? Or prestine versions of TV broadcasts we already have, such as Hampton 81?

You are right in your reasoning Gazza...comments between songs are often from different shows than the following/previous number in broadcasts and official albums.
But why would there be a comment about Houston in this web-airing, if everything else there comes from Detroit ? Sounds very strange.
