Linda Ronstadt's Tumbling Dice
Posted by: Pecman ()

A lot of the older fans must know of this...but maybe a lot of the younger ones don't...

Came across an old Linda Rondstadt vinyl LP...I think it was released in 1977...she covered Tumbling Dice...side 2 song 4...Waddy Wachtel (Winos) was her guitar player on the record.

I must admit, she really did a good job...more upbeat country rock style but she pretty much nails it...if you can get a hold of it...give it a listen.

Rockman, if you read this...please post a picture of her and Mick on stage.

Thanks.

PECMAN

It was a big hit when it came out. I remember hearing it on the radio a bunch.

Was flipping through a few of the wife's CDs a while ago, which of course are kept separate from mine, and came across this album. I hadn't heard her version of TD for a long time. I was amazed how rocking it is. Sounds much better than the writers' current version, I'm afraid....

TD starts at around the 4:00 mark.

It's on the "FM" movie soundtrack.

LR doing TD with Leo Sayer. Can you say, "dork"?

She makes him feel like dancing!

I have it on a vinyl single from 1977. It's the b-side!! A-side is Poor, poor pityful me (Warren Zevon).

She also does a live version of "Poor, Poor Pitiful Me" on the FM soundtrack, as well as introducing her band (including Waddy).

Linda Ronstadt's Tumbling Dice ... is pretty OK in my opinion. Not as divinely scrumptiously wonderful as the boys' 20,000 different versions we've enjoyed over the years of course, but OK nevertheless !

Very tight band she had behind her thru most of the 70's...

A great version of the song. She and Warren Zevon shared several band members. She covered many of Zevon's songs (Hasten Down the Wind and Poor Poor Pitiful being two great ones).

She had a great voice.

She looks like Princess Leia.

She was really a looker in her day. "She Was Hot".

Unfortunately, the burritos have caught up to her.

She was 'cute', but a real looker? Mmm, she was okay, but not a stunning beauty by any stretch. Talented? No doubt. Gorgeous? Mmmm... I don't really think so. ig brown eyes, sweet looking, sure. Give any chick a voice and a nice rack and they're definitley do-able (think Stevie Nicks).

Even amongst her peers, the were women who outshone her - think of the etherial (and amazingly still radiant) Emmylou Harris. Her beauty transcends horniness... like Audrey Hepburn did.

I like Stevie's look too.

But those big, dark eyes on a brunette get me every time. I even married one of 'em!

W Miller--thanks for posting--had not heard that in years. It's a pretty good version--can't touch the Stones version, but still pretty good.

You're a real piece of work, Scelsa.

In case that's an American phrase that doesn't make sense to the non-Americans on this forum, it's not a compliment.

What is your PROBLEM, buddy?

how depressingly predictable that a discussion of MUSIC deteriorates into a chauvinistic "sizing up" of a female artist. courtesy of Elmo Lewis, of course! (shockingly not SCL this time!)

in any event, i think her TD is quite good. then again, i love the song so much that i'd probably even enjoy a version done by The Who!

Her version kicks ass. May have something to do w/her flaming affair w/Mickette. Mick and Bianca had a big fight around this time because Bianca knew when and where Mick and Linda were meeting.

Nik--I hear what you are saying, but.......do you have any doubt that she used her sex appeal to sell her music? It sure seems that way, maybe not. But, if she did, then why should it be "out of bounds" to comment on it, one way or the other?

i may be mistaken, but i thought the purpose of this thread was to discuss her rendition of tumbling dice.

moreover, isn't it true that mick uses his sex appeal to sell the stones' music? yet when was the last time that a discussion of a stones song deteriorated into whether or not mick has "had too many tacos?" clearly, the only reason this happened was because she's a woman.

listen, i'm as straight as an arrow, but i find this kind of boorishness really pathetic - and offensive.

Ha! Ok, fair enough. Two things, one; by way of disclaimer my initial post pertained SOLELY to her version of the song. Also, it might not apply to people on this board, but there are females out there (my secretary among them) who find it "GROSS" that "an old man dresses like that". I am not doing it justice, they manage to make it quite funny.

How much would appeal to me to have an audio version of this!

God bless the Rolling Stones!
