I think I have a picture of her with Mick on stage, but I can't find it right now. If no one else posts one I'll look some more tomorrow and try to post it.

i always thought it was strange that she changes the lyric to "people try to rape me"........that it might give a crazy fan a crazy idea.

Her version is a good version. I was 9 yrs old when Exile came out....and because of the radio stations my parents listened to...I think I heard her version before hearing the Stones' version.

Re: lyric change......did she do that on her own or did Stones change it for her...or have to OK it?

The story goes that she told Mick she dug the song, but didn't know all the words. He wrote the words on the back of an envelope. Don't know why she changed them.

Funny how an insult from you just seems like a compliment. Yeah, Linda is bigger than she was - so am I, so is Mick Taylor, etc..

And, yeah, I like good looking women - no apologies for that!

re: linda's looks....

i don't care how she looks now...no interest.......but back in the '70s she was defintely exploiting her own looks/sexuality. who wouldn't?

so.....it's sort of a live by the sword, die by the sword sort of thing......if you want your looks to be an asset when you're hot...it's legit for others to view them as detriment when you're NOT.

In 1977 I had her poster on my wall. this one:

I like her version of TDice too.

I remember Ronstadt from being on Johnny Cash's TV show in the late 60's/early 70's. She wore a miniskirt so short you had to wonder why she bothered. But boy, could she belt out a song. She became very adept at doing other people's songs, especially Warren Zevon. More than a few then-aspiring songwriters and musicians (Zevon, J.D. Souther, Jackson Browne, etc.) were able to get food on the table because she recorded their material. Then there were others, such as the Stones, who didn't need the royalties. She did Tumbling Dice just as well as she did other covers back then, Blue Bayou, That'll Be The Day, Tracks Of My Tears among them.

And who else can say they've had long running relationships with Jerry Brown and George Lucas (albeit at different times, as far as we know). smiling smiley

If you find being called a "chauvinist" complementary, then you have bigger problems than i realized.

Alright, no more Mr. Nice Guy. You're full of sh*t. There has never been a man who loved women any more than myself. At the moment, you're my biggest problem/pain in the ass.

I haven't gone blind though and I realize the lovely Linda is twice the woman she once was.

Wasn't that in one of Johnny's prison specials? Unfortunateley all those on the death row then can't tell about it anymore.

I have to say that I never liked Linda's version of "Tumbling Dice."

In fact I hated it. I used to call it "A Crime Against Nature."

In the mid-late '70's she was on the radio ALL THE TIME!! Some of her covers like Buddy Holly's "It's So Easy" or the Everly's "When Will I Be Loved" were OK, but others like "Heat Wave" were pure torture.

I put her version of T.D. in that category. She stuck that song in her sunny So. Cal. music/meat grinder and what came out was just more product. Took out all the mystery. It didn't need her treatment.

the story i always heard about what inspired ronstadt to do this song....was that her band loved tumbling dice....and used to warm up by playing it all the time.

so she started singing it live...and then recorded it.

you must agree....her band had good taste in music.

Her band featured Waddy Watchel of X-Pensive Winos fame. Is this where Keith first noticed him? He does a pretty fair imitation of the riff master.

they sure do.
giving linda some credit here tho, as she seems to have always picked really cool songwriters to cover (and discover)...
j.d. souther, buddy holly, the rolling stones, warren zevon, chuck berry; there are very many, many other examples...
she has an excellent ear for this kinda thing. she's made more than one songwriter's entire career.

It might have been there as well, but I remembered this from Cash's variety show, which was on ABC back then, if I recall correctly.

I too had a poster of Linda on my wall as a young teenager. The one where she's dressed in little cub scout shorts.

She combined two of my favorite pasttimes, music and sex (the other was weed of course), and I always thought she had good taste in covers too.
