One of the really nice things about concerts in the early 70s was that you could often see three or four bands for only about five bucks!
In the summer of 1971, I saw Canned Heat, Rare Earth, and the J. Geils Band, in Salem, VA. J. Geils had just released that great first album, were one of the opening acts, and did a blistering set. When they finished, instead of going backstage or something, they just hung out by their equipment while the roadies set Canned Heat up.
I was 16 years old, wandered over to Peter Wolf, said a quick "wow, man, great show!" or something equally as imaginative, and was ready to walk away, expecting a quick "thanks" in reply. Wolf put his hand out first to shake mine, and just started talking, "yeah, hey, man, thanks, we just got here about two hours ago, gigged last night (wherever the heck it was), where are you from, man?" etc., etc. We wound up having about a 15 minute conversation, which was pretty cool for an awestruck teenager.
When I got to see them again in 1973, they had hit it big, and there was no longer a chance to have a moment like that. However, I'll always remember how nice he was, and things like that make you a big fan of a group.
