Not that it matters much, but the intro actually is:

E-----------------------------------:||-----------------------:||
B---9--9--10--9---------------------:||---9--9--9------9------:||
G---9--9--9---9---------------------:||---9--9--9------9------:||

A-----------------9--9--9--9--9-----:||-----------------------:||
E-----------------6--6--6--7--7->-0-:||-----------------------:||

Mathijs is wrong (except for the low E string (the '0'), TeleK is right.

I am right. There is no C# in the second chord of the intro, it's not a sus chord. If you can't hear it, check out the video's.

what you're tabbing is a sus cord. Keith is just going to and A chord: C#-E-A (check out the scale of A major and E major).

I'm just pluckin' around in open G to that youTube video and hey - there is no C# in the intro.

it doesn't come in handy at all.

Re: Chords for "Rocks Off"

It's a classic Keith intro, and in fact it is a lot smarter than you would think from a first listen. The intro is just an E with an added A on the B string. any normal guitarist (like you and me) would be a standard sus7 chord, because that's how keith Richards plays in our minds. But he doesn't. By adding only the A note, the intro remains angry and agressive, and very powerfull. The intro guitar on the left is Keith, the second rythm guitar on the right is keith, and the middle guitar, the one with the flowing chord pattern is Taylor. Taylor follows Keith in the first chord: he also only plays the added A on the E chord. If you would add the C# on the D string, the intro would become full, heavy and a bit "hard rock". It's the same trick he uses on the intro of Brown Sugar: he only plays the full sus7 chords on the G and C, but not on the F, Aflat and Bflat. This way he maintains the agressive push.

Mail me your Email address and I'll send you the original into isolated, and you'll hear he only plays the A note. And check out 4 Licks, you can hear it very clear.

FWIW,
I agree with Mathijs on this one. It's always intrigued me how much magic Keith can generate simply with subtleties of which of those two spare fingers he employs where !
Thing is though, it's hard to be "wrong" about this stuff... because you'll often find that Keith does himself, sometimes, play it way you or I thought it went ;^)

Mathijs;

You are the guru when it comes to Stones and guitars. Did I read right that you have the guitar track to "Rocks Off" isolated, and am I right to assume that this is an isolated track from "Exile"? If I have the info correct, please pardon my while I drool and please e-mail me at tommy@tommywomack.com

God bless,
Tommy

I never care too much to reproduce the original (deep down I'm too lazy) but on the F, Aflat and Bflat part of BS I also add the ... (? don't know what it is called ?)

So on the A flat it goes this way

1 2
1 3
1 1

Don't know if it is correct but it sounds good!

now I have to try and read these chords/tablature...

agree about how a simple guitarist (like myself) reckon it's a susp chord at the start....I knew it was something different...mine never sounded right.

thanks to all...

On the intro of Brown sugar the varitions are:

G:
D---12-------------:||
B---12--13---------:||
G---12--12---------:||
D---12--14---------:||
G---12-------------:||

C:
D---5-------------:||
B---5--6----------:||
G---5--5----------:||
D---5--7----------:||
G---5-------------:||

Eflat:
D---9-------------:||
B---9--10---------:||
G---9--11---------:||
D---9-------------:||
G---9-------------:||

C:
D---5-------------:||
B---5--6----------:||
G---5--5----------:||
D---5--7----------:||
G---5-------------:||

Aflat:
D---1-------------:||
B---1--2----------:||
G---1-------------:||
D---1-------------:||
G---1-------------:||

Bflat:
D---3-------------:||
B---3--4----------:||
G---3--5----------:||
D---3-------------:||
G---3-------------:||

C:
D---5-------------:||
B---5--6----------:||
G---5--5----------:||
D---5--7----------:||
G---5-------------:||

First play the base chord, than the addition.

Allright Mathijs, I received you're mp3s. Virtually you sent me the "left" speaker and the "right" speaker apart from each other (balance left-right). Now it's definitely clear to hear that Keith's doing what I said!!! I trust my ears.

Trust your ears as you like. But then tell me: why does't Keith play the F# note on any 1972 show, and not at the Baton Rouge shows, and not in 94/95, and not on Forty Licks, and not before my very own eyes from three feet distance?

Maybe he plays the F# on Exile, but later dropped it on live shows?

Just checked my Exile TAB book, and there it is indeed using a F#, and also six strings open G instead of regular tuning as stated above:

D-----------------------------------:||
B---9--9--10--9---------------------:||
G---9--9--9---9---------------------:||
D---9--9--11--9----4---4--4--4------:||
G------------------3---3--3--4------:||
D-----------------------------------:||

I guess in the end it doesn't really matter, they all sound right.

You clearly hear the open low E string and the E note on the A string ringing in the intro, so it can never be open G, and Keith simply doesn't play the F# note. Playing the F# note basically shift the E chord to the A chord, while the intro is E to B. There is no A chord in te intro.

This thing of the tuning of K's guitar on the exile version has always puzzled me.

Indeed on the tab book of exile, which generally I find quite accurate, it is in open G with the low E that remains an E.

On the other hand live it always has been in plain standard.

Yesterday I tried it both ways, and the thing is ... I still do not know. THe intro, and particularly the B part sounds very "fat", but my ears ain't good enough to say if this is a B played at the 4th fret of a G tuned guitar, or at the 7th of a standard.

But what still leaves me uncertain is the bridge part, that in open G (with the low E string in E) just sounds perfect, while in standard, something is missing. Plus the sound of the guitar on the exile version always sounded slightly "fuller" than the 72 live versions (standard), but this could be because of the odubbed guitars and production.
