No he didn't. That song is hardly worth mentioning.

The guitars on the song Dirty Work are excellent. It was the last record where they sounded ferocious IMO. I can listen to this song for the guitaring over and over. Ronnie and Keith still had it at this point.

It's a great great tune! This track has some of the tightest rhythm guitar ever (Keith). No bass, just a sax (played by Ronnie?) covering up. Superb! When I come to think of it, Dirty Work isn't so bad after all...

Like Dandy says DW isn't really that bad. It's alwasy when I take it apart that I realize there is much good stuff. Thing is the bad is SO BAD that it taints the overall album so profoundly. "Back to Zero" is surely one of the worst things they ever did. IMO just seeing the credit to "Leavell" ruins it a lot ofr me. And I try to not mind Leavell. "Hold Back" is also very bad. But that is really just 2 songs. Then for me I really do not like "Sleep", nor do I like the "Deep Mix" of "Too Rude". The Winos did it better later. I am also one of the Non-Winning-Ugly-Haters.
So there are only really 2 songs I flat out son't like. I think on 12x5 there are also 2 songs I don't like. But I hold 12x5 in zillion times higher regard than DW. Makes no sense.

There have been many DW threads, both positive and negative. My overall feeling of the album is still pretty much what it was when it came out. Namely: Why are the drums so bloody loud? I've read it was all Lillywhite's idea. I still think with better production, this album could have been decent. But for me, even the title track is pretty awful-- loud drums, awful (throaty) singing, and messy guitars... And as for Chuck, I bet he may have felt the need to try to "save" this album, and found himself in a prominent role w/ Stones music from this era forward... where it all went wrong!!! imo, of course...

Winning Ugly and Back to Zero are attempts at making 80's equivalents to Miss You and Emotional Rescue... trying to appeal to the current dance crowd... Both could have been decent without the synth sounds and beefy drums.

Steve lillywhite even turned the drums up too loud on Joan Armatrading albums...go figure ;^)

How about Roy Thomas Baker on Woody's Gimme Some Neck. Bbbbbaaaddd drum sound. Bad bad, not good bad.

Ah, you mean the cardboard boxes stuffed with duvets, recorded from behind a wall of matresses ?

Has anybody EVER recorded a better drum sound than HTW ?

If you happen to like loud drums, you should listen to this album. It beats even Lillywhite´s excesses. There´s some good songs on it though, a pity you hardly can hear them...

I just wish I didn't need to buy this one twice!

This was back when vinyl was still prevalent and the CD version came out weeks or months later...

DW does get a lot of discussion here (I'm a big DW-lover myself), and I always read a lot of opinion that:

1) DW has a bad drum sound. Too prominent in the mix.
2) Hold Back has awful drumming.

I can't agree with either. In fact I love CW's slightly sideways beat on Hold Back. To me, Undercover has a much worse drum sound, and they are significantly louder in the mix. Add-in the occasional drum machine, and Undercover ranks as the worst disc, percussion-wise, IMHO.

A Bigger Bang is often criticized for drums too loud. Can't say I agree with this viewpoint either.

Just my two-bits.

Had It With You is just raw Stones. I do miss Wyman's bass. Another good (sort of break up song-anti valley girl song) not to be forgotten is Stupid Girl.

Had it With You—great sound—too bad it was not applied to the rest of the album.
