Stones didn't do encore's
Posted by: pgarof ()

During the 70's the Stones didn't do any encore's, as far as I can remember. I heard a story about a woman who used to be part of the Stones production team suggested they didn't do any encores as it always left the audience wanting more. I do remeber seeing the Stones during the 70's and them never coming back on, does anyone else remember this happening or have they heard the same story?

"we're going to do 1 more and then we're going to GO" The encore concept is retarded anyway, I would rather they just stay and play. I really agree with the Supersuckers and their "Fake Encores"

Yeah, I remember Jagger saying sometime in the '70s (read it in a book or so) that they didn't like encores, that you don't do 'em for just the encore's sake itself. And that way they really became "real" the few times they did 'em, like Honky Tonk Women and Uptight/Satisfaction in '72.

Early LA Forum show in 1972 they came back and did HONKY TONK WOMAN but i think it was rare. Thing was there was a big crowd outside waiting to get in for the Late show so it was a fast way to clean out the early show audience....

In 1973 at the Forum for the Earthquake Benefit show they did MIDNIGHT RAMBLER for an encore - great version, not on the bootleg

In 1975 at the LA Forum shows they did SYMPATHY as the encore every night....

I can't remember what the deal was at the 1978 shows, I think they did SATISFACTION...

They did DO encores (as you can see) but it was ALWAYS only one song. Look at the shows now, it's only 2 songs...The Jag's a TRADITIONAL man.......

ahh, time for the semi-annual Stones Didn't Use to Do Encores thread again!
if i recall right, they did encores on something like four occasions in 72 -
Boston was one of them.

i'm pretty sure they only played satisfaction a few times in 78 and the one time was mid set in philadephia

I saw them at The roundhouse in 71, Earls Court (I think 73 or 75) Les Abortous Paris in 76 and at Knebworth. Apart from Knebworth, because i can't remember, they did not do one encore, it seemed to be a thing for them not to do it.

That's true, but it became an encore later in the tour.
The first couple of shows, Street FIghting Man was the encore, but they never got that one right in 78...or 81.

I think they did encores on more than 4 occasions in '72. I know of at least 5 occassions of them doing "Uptight/Satisfaction" and several other cases of them doing "Honky Tonk Women". But for the most part, encores were not the norm for the Stones in those days. Not a single encore on the '69 American tour or the '70 European Tour. They did a couple of encores on the '71 English tour and a few on the '72 North American tour and of course they did "Midnight Rambler" as an encore at the 1/18/73 Los Angelos show. There were no encores on the '73 Winter tour (unless you count the Nicaraguan Benefit) or the '73 European tour. In '75, they only did encores in New York and Los Angelos ("Sympathy For The Devil") and on the '76 European tour, they only did encores at Earl's Court ("Sympathy" again). In '78, they started using "Satisfaction" or "Street Fighting Man" as the occasional encore and by '81, the encore had become a regular part of the show.......

Could you please write something about The Roundhouse gig in 71 ? You remember that show?

+ Key To The Highway in Leichester 1976, and maybe one can count Midnight Rambler from Baton Rouge as an encore.
THen again, SFTD in 75/76 was a "planned/regular-for-that-city encore" just like Satisfaction in 81.

No encores in '78 except for a couple of shows. I know they did Satisfaction as the encore in Oakland on Mick's birthday. I think the other show with an encore was in Philadelphia?

I saw the Stones at The Roundhouse in 71, this was my very first Stones show, I had no money but went to the show and stood by the back door right through the whole show listning from outside. I was begging the doorman to let me and my friend in but he wouldn't, only he did hold the door open so we could hear. In the end he let us in right as they were doing the last number, Satisfaction, I got right to the front and was in touching distance from the Stones. Mick was sweating buckets, during the song he threw baskets of flowers into the audience and I managed to get one. I pressed it in a book and still have it somewhere.

I will never forget that concert, it was such an energy filled night, the whole audience were in a frenzy, such excitement and Mick Taylor was exellent as were they all. I was 18 at the time and i think it was the best experience of my life.I wish I could get the concert on DVD.

Thanks pgarof, so it was the best experience of your life, it would have been for me too, it says something about what kind of magic the Stones concerts were then, we need official releases of those tours!

You're right......I forgot about "Midnight Rambler" at the '75 Baton Rouge shows. I didn't know "Key To The Highway" was done as an encore in Leichester in '76.....I knew they played it but I assumed it was in the middle of the set. Didn't Clapton sit in on that one?

Yes Eric was there, I think he sang on that one. There are no tapes of that show, but I've read somewhere that it was the encore.

The New Jersey show (Capitol Theater; Passaic--"Out on Bail") ended with Street Fighting Man--not sure if it was an encore, but since they normally ended with JJ Flash and SFM came after, by guess is that it was an encore. SFM is not on most of the boots cause it was during that song the casette got stolen.

As ofr encores--I kind of think it was cool that they did them infrequently in the '70's that made it a REAL encore and the sort of "intermission" you get today--not just the Stones, every band.

Hi Beely, June 14th 1978, they had played 2 shows in 78, June 10th & 12th, but they were very sloppy, but in Capitol Theatre it was 100% raw rock'n roll from the opening song, Let It Rock, amazing atmosphere on that bootleg,
I think there were about 3000 people in that place, sky-high prices for black-market tickets.

A great moment from Passaic 78...when they do Sweet Little Sixteen, terrific version, and Mick shouts "Slow down!!" during the solos, because it goes way too fast, but nobody is slowing down as it's cooking so baadly.

There is a book where I recall reading a story. In it Jagger gets incensed at someone saying "We never do encores!"
I don't get this whole encore concept of nowadays. It's even already included in setlists as 'encore'. What is the audience doesn't want an encore? That is what I used to love - a band had to eran an encore. It actually meant something. And the crowd had to work to get one too. Today the audeince doesn't even bother to have to clap or stomp real hard becausew they know they'll coem back anyway.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

Yeah, Beely--it is a great place to see a show--saw the Bluesbreakers there with Mick Taylor.

Agree Erik--love the Passaic show--they were hot that nite, that's for sure.

I read somewhere (Flippo's book?) that tickets for that show were going for $500.00 which in 1978 was a pretty fair chunk of change.

Especially Mick seemed to be rocking, and "on" something, but it didn't make him sloppy, just more into the songs.

i was lucky to see the encore with wonderlove and stevie '72...a very special night..probably the best rock show i've ever seen in my life...
and certainly the coolest encore i've ever seen.

i saw other stops on that tour and i think i remember them playing around 70 minutes total...which was exciting and energizing and total rock and roll bliss...i don't think anyone left feeling ripped of...ain't that peculiar in retrospect? i guess springsteen started it with all those 3 and 4 hour extravaganzas...and generally speaking throught the biz with major artists...concert length seemed to grow out of that phenom...
that's just a guess...

Beely--if you do not have Out On Bail--you sure are in for a treat---one of my favorite boots of all-time. Erik is right, Mick was rocking that night. I believe they had alot of the tickets for friends of the band---in fact, if I remember correctly, tickets did not go on sale til shortly before the show and they may have been billed as something other than the Rolling Stones.

As for the time---funny, you mention that--the other nite, I timed Hansome Girls, now I know it is a "compliation" but it represents the set list and therefore is a fair barometer--anyway 88 minutes---and when you play that well and that hard, you, as a fan, have gotten your money's worth.
