I'd say about 1%. They never play festivals.

It is 100% certain they will not play Glastonbury 2006...............for obvious reasons.... smiling smiley

the Artic Monkeys&Björk will headline Glastonbury.

Well i think you mean 2007 ! There was no festival in 2006, every four years or so, they have a break to give the fields a rest.

I would be suprised if the stones play, but the timing is about right, the end of june. Also, how many other bands could there be that are 'the biggest band in the world' if you take away U2 and coldplay?

Muse are pretty huge. R.E.M. ? Again not biggest band in the world, but im just trying to think of very big BANDS, not solo artists etc...

Well, come to think of it, I'd make it 20%...the biggest band in the world can only mean Stones...or just maybe U2, but it's still a bit odd

STrange that the Taylor-jokers haven't made a certain post here..

Most of the line-up's done now," Mr Eavis told BBC 6Music, adding that the "biggest band in the world" had also contacted him about performing.

But he denied it was U2 or Coldplay. "You won't know until after 1 April", when tickets go on sale, he said.

Normally, I'd laugh at the thought of the Stones playing Glastonbury (it gets discussed every year and dismissed as a non starter for the reasons Erik suggests), but looking at Eavis' quote, there's really only one band that fits that description and I'm amazed that whoever wrote that piece for the BBC site didnt pick up on it (Coldplay? Christ almighty!)

Quite obvious that the Stones arent going to play too many shows in the UK this summer, so it would be understandable if they headlined what is the biggest and most high profile festival in Europe. Personally, I hope they dont as youhave to buy the tickets before the bill is confirmed so most Stones fans wont get tickets - plus I hate bloody festivals anyway. It'd be a bit of a shame if a non-Stones concert like that turns out to be their only UK show

I was just thinking, perhaps he is talking about radiohead. I know the stones are a bigger global band, but this is michael eavis, the glasonbury organiser who is saying 'the biggest band in the world', so its just his opinion. And he says it is not coldplay or U2.

So here is my shortlist:

1. Rolling Stones
2. Radiohead
3. Muse
4. R.E.M.

Yes, that is really odd!
EIther..the tickets will be SO expensive that normal people would back away,
or
The Rolling STones are doing it for charity, so to speak.

I'll include REM as "the biggest band", as Mr. Jimmy suggested.

Forget Muse - who are already playing two nights at Wembley Stadium a couple of weeks earlier and REM - who can no longer claim to be the biggest band in the world but who are likely to have a new album out in 2007, but they havent started recording it yet so its unlikely to be out for ths summer.

Radiohead are supposedly bringing a new album out in mid-2007 per wikipedia
[en.wikipedia.org]

It would be a bit of a stretch however to call a band who play theatre sized venues in the US "the biggest band in the world"...

Theres only two bands that can really compete for that title. One is from Dublin and the other is English. And only one of them is likely to be touring this summer.

Good god let's hope not. Who would want to stand among thousands of people who didn't specifically pay to see the Stones. Glastonbury looks like hell.

Gazza, how about The Who ?
Or a re-united Pink Floyd?

Hasn't Dave Gilmour ruled out any further PF reunions? Big move considering the cash that would be involved.

Maybe he has, I don't pay attention to what they are doing/saying.
But, The Who...?

no way are the Who the biggest band in the world. Although they will be playing shows this summer.

> Or a re-united Pink Floyd?

yeah, but theyd need to 'reunite' to be a possibility for that title.

Erik, with glasto, the tickets are around £150 for the whole weekend, so you just take a tent or whatever and find a space in one of the fields set aside for camping. So the price does not represent what bands are playing. It goes up a little bit each year, but not much. They sell around 100,000 tickets, and there is talk of them making space for an extra 25,000 people this year. Back in 2004 it was virtually impossible to get tickets. Obviously, 100,000 people did, but there was an incredibly huge demand. Why? Because it was leaked before the tickets went onsale that McCartney was headlining the saturday night slot. It was his only UK show that year. However, he played a blinding set and won over a ton of new fans and received amazing reviews in the press as well. So it was a great move for him. It may work the same for the stones, who knows.

No way would it be pink floyd or the who.

Also, glastonbury ALWAYS sells out very fast, regardless of who is playing. Many people go just for the 'fun' of it, and are actually not that bothered about what bands are playing. Crazy indeed...

Thanks for the info Mr Jimmy,
I guess it sounds...possible.
But RollingStones never play anywhere without their giant stage and such.
My guess is that Mr Eavis got a little too Eager, because he got a "we might be very interested" from somebody working for RS...without speaking to Cohl and the band.

Yeah i can imagine how the rumours start, and that it would be quite unlikely.
As far as the stage in concerned, the 'pyramid' (main) stage is very big, with enough room for large video screens behind the band (like the licks arena stage for example) so im sure they would make it look great. And with fireworks at the end etc etc...

It would be pretty cool if the stones do it, as long as its not the only UK show.

I agree. And they could certainly do both, because it would be two entirely separate audiences. Plus the exposure from playing Glastonbury would be massive.

And

Not to mention that it would probably be broadcast on TV right?

can't see it happening, would be hugely suprising.
Eavis does not pay big bucks to secure acts- you're expected to play for the 'prestige'.
It was rumoured that Eavis snubbed U2, in 2005, when U2, wanted to headline, have total control over television/recording rights of their set and were asking for too much money.
Eavis has a reputation for not pulling any punches or pandering to egos.

It'd be great if the Stones wrre to play Glastonbury, but I wouldn't be there! MNuddy fields are not my thing. How much are day tickets usually?

Re: Glastonbury 2006

no day tickets.

application forms will be available for download from beginning of feb.
passport-style tickets (apparently tout/scalper-proof)
will be available only through a lottery system.

they don't exist. you pay for a weekend ticket. you get a weekend ticket. they announce the acts appearing after all tickets are sold.

you may think its a mad idea...it sells out every year so the organiser must be doing something right. the festival, by the sound of things, might not be the particular cup of whatever-you're-having-yourself for most folks of this parish...

it IS a gamble when you buy tickets...

That's the Stones f**ked then

I love The Who, but if Eavis thinks for a second theyre the biggest act in the world, he's clearly gone prematurely senile.

He's not referring to the Who but to a "modern band", which would appear to rule out our boys, no?

Okay, maybe its the Reading/Leeds Carling Weekend in which you can purchase day tickets for.

It all sounds like too much hassle for me!
