OT: Most heartbreaking movie moments
Posted by: Hanns Rainsch ()
Date: January 30, 2007 05:09

I just saw the Clint Eastwood picture "Absolute Power" and after drinking six beer I suddenly found myself thinking about this topic, just because he's such an incredible director and actor.
"The Bridges Of Madison County" - When Meryl Streep realises that she will never see Clint Eastwood again.
"Million Dollar Baby" - When Clint Eastwood stands in front of Hillary Swank's bed and decideds to let things come to an end.
"Lost In Translation" - When Bill Murray sings "More Than This" to Scarlett Johansen.
"Magnolia" - When Tom Cruise cries at the bed of his dying father, Jason Robards (He was really dying then).
"Pulp Fiction" - When Uma Thurman dances to "Girl, You'll Be A Woman, Soon" and gets an overdose.
"Moonlight Mile" - When Jake Gyllenhal is standing in the bar, starting this Stones song.
"The Royal Tennenbaums" - When Gwyneth Paltrow is playing "She Smiled Sweetly" and "Ruby Tuesday" back to back on her desk while making love to her "brother".
"East Of Eden" - When James Dean wants to give his "bean" dollars to his father.
That was all that came to mind in this drunken moment, period.

I remember that when I was a child smiling smiley I was crying with Forrest Gump at the end of the movie when he waits the bus with his son. Also I remember that in Braveheart had two moments that were heartbreaking. The one at the begining when the little girl cuts a flower and gives it to William Wallace, and at the end of course where they torture him and he sees at the crowd his dead wife.It had great music in this part.
Now that I refered to Mel Gibson,in lethal weapon 3 I think where his partner kills the friend of his son and Mel goes to his boat and finds him drunk and they start saying something about friendship.
I think that the last scene of E.T was voted the most heartbreaking moment of all time.

I thought ...If Spielberg kills ET I'll never see another one of his movies ever!

The scene at the end of Godfather II is so haunting and sad. Michael sitting alone amongst the dead blowing leaves. And then the end of Godfather III where he dies...whew!
Born Free!! God that movie made me cry when I was a kid!!

God I was sad at the end of The Departed when Leo gets capped! I was shocked, angered, then sad...great movie!

SHit I cry at the corniest things, any movie or show where a kid regains a lost relationship with a parent is so sad!

Ricky Schroeder in the The Champ at the end gets me.
The one that kills me though is at the end of Terms of Endearment, when Debra Winger is seeing her kids for the last time, and the face on her little boy as he is walking out the door. That is heartbreaking to me.

The end of Dr. Zhivago - when he sees Lara from the bus and he's trying to get her attention, but it's too loud, and then he dies and she's right there, but doesn't notice him.

What makes that moment so sad is music that accompanies the scene. It is from the Opera "Cavalleria Rusticana" by Pietro Mascagni and the piece that is played is called "Intermezzo Sinfonico".

They also use flashbacks of Michael dancing with all his women. IMO this piece is the most heartbreaking saddest scores in all of music. No words, only music. Every time I hear it I can't think about it or it brings tears to my eyes. Yes men have hearts too. Italian men.

Don't laugh but:

In the "Color Purple" at the end when choir starts singing "God is watching" (not sure of the exact name) and when Celie (Whoopi Goldberg) sees her sister return from Africa and the camera flashes over to Danny Glovers character sitting on his horse.

The end of "Beaches" with Bette Midler.

"Brian's Song" with James Caan

In Star Trek "The Wrath of Kahn" when Spock is torpedoed to the planet in a casket.

Most heartbtreaking?

Bambi, when his mother died in the forest fire.

Love Story, when the gal dies from cancer.

Brians Song, the guy dies from cancer.

Most intense movie moments:

Full Metal Jacket, when the guy blows his head off after killing the Drill Instructor.

The Excorcist, when after killing the old priest, Reagan smiles and laughs like a little child.

YES! Me too, that is a fantastic piece of music, and the ending where you see him dancing with his various women in his life...I know pt. III was much malighned by the critics, but to me very unfair. I found it to be a great film!

Another sad moment is in Mysterious Skin (if you haven't seen it go get it!) when the two boys realize what their connection is...very heart wrenching!

The end of My Dog Skip.

That slaughtered me and I've never even owned a dog.

I saw it on an 11 hour plane trip. While drunk.

I was a mess.
