Let It Bleed - the song - is utterly essential to the Let It Bleed album. The mood, the feel, the drawling decadence...the knockabout piano pushing the rhythm forward...the slide guitar cutting through the basement murk...Jagger's leering, minacious vocals...a brilliant cut.

Dead Flowers is not essential to Sticky Fingers...but its galloping beauty and taunting yet heartbreaking lyrics make it a wonderful addition.

Both songs are Stones classics.

Like Let it Bleed (imo not up to the quality of the rest of the record--but that record is stratospheric so that may not be completely fair)


LOVE Dead Flowers---great tune. It does seem like the offspring of Let it Bleed.

The stones have a whole catalog full of country themed songs. Something about Let it Bleed just moves and flows a little better than Dead Flowers. But like everybody else says,they are both great. Now if you wanted to really start an argument. What's better Sweet Virginia or Wild Horses?

Dead Flowers is one of my top ten. Sometimes my #1. Let it Bleed is great too. But I give Dead Flowers the nod.

But I do agree that Let it Bleed is an essential component to the named album. It does fit with the overall mood and theme, and really is a stunning end to the 60's...with the lean on me 60's sentiment to the decadence of you can cum on me which would be the 70's! Great music as well...the slide and piano are so beautiful...
But don't get me wrong, I love Dead Flowers, but Let it Bleed edges it out for me.

Let It Bleed. Although both are classics, Dead Flowers sounds a bit kitschy.

As I almost always skip Let it bleed when I play the album, Dead Flowers is my definite choice here. And I like it! Remember getting it live in Oslo 98, what a blast!

Both are absolute classics. I don't do a lot of Stones stuff when playing guitar in pub sessions, etc., preferring to leave that to the Stones themselves (a favourite track always loses a bit of magic once you learn how to perform it properly).

Dead Flowers is, however, much requested at such sessions and enjoyed by musicians and audience alike. A Stones song that transcends the genre. I have to say Country Honk goes down a storm too (although the non-afficianados no doubt think they're singing along with Honky Tonk Women, there are plenty who are familiar with the album track and appreciate the difference). These are organic acoustic country songs which years ago opened the ears of people like me to a style of music which, up to that point, I had thought of as commercial crap and very uncool. It's an education for which I will be forever grateful.

When I bought my first Stones CDs I listened to Stripped (And Voodoo Lounge) the most. The tracks that stood out on Stripped for me back then was The Spider And The Fly, Let It Bleed and Dead Flowers. At first Let It Bleed was my favourite. Later on it became Dead Flowers. Also, if you check out previois live versions it's evident that Dead Flowers is the best. For me anyway. Let It Bleed is also very good. Very close to Dead Flowers, but it isn't nearly as good. I love the version of Let It Bleed from MSG The Other Show 2003 (The one that's not from TV). Hubert Sumlin adds some very nice touches on it.

The songs are different.

Dead Flowers is a pure country song. Let It Bleed is even more melodic, though it turns out like a rocker in the end.

The songs are very hard to compare IMO. But if I had to, I'm gonna have to vote for Dead Flowers because of the vocal harmonies and the guitars.

I must say that I like both songs the same, but I like recent versions of "Let It Bleed" more than those of "Dead Flowers", because they are more edgy, like "Dead Flowers" was in 1971-72. I think both are typical Stones songs, musically and in terms of lyrics.
I loved the duet with Dave Matthews (Well, I never liked their version of "Memory Motel") when Dave just growls "But she knifes me in my dirty, filthy basement...".
Also, "Let It Bleed" features one of my favourite lines ever: "Take my arm, take my leg, oh baby, don't you take my head".

I've never before heard either of these songs referred to as anything but brilliant classics. If I'm choosing a MOST brilliant classic... How can I go with anything but Mick and Keef up to the microphone to sing together? That tune is THE scene in Ladies and Gents.
