The thread in which we praise the Brussels Affair version of Tumbling Dice.
Date: January 4, 2007 22:02

Has a better rock n' roll performance than this ever been recorded? (Not withstanding my powerhouse karaoke performances of Honky Tonk Women!) Those last two minutes, as the song transitions into the coda - musical ecstasy! Just love the way KR and MT complement each other as the song reaches its overpowering climax. (OK, I'll stop the sexual metaphors at this point.)

In any event, do what the subject instructs: praise the Brussels Affair version of Tumbling Dice.

Perhaps the best version of the best rock song EVUH . . .

Honestly, I thought the same thoughts myself, 2 days ago.
Without even hearing that version, just thinking about it.
It's probably THE best Stones performance (only beaten by MRambler from Brussels).
It was the stuff that Taylor plays at the very end...those 2 seconds that can't be heard on 90% of the Brussels bootlegs...it can be heard on Nasty Music from Vinyl Gang, for instance. The mix differs, that's why you can't hear Taylor very loud on most releases.
Anyway, it was that old thread about that Taylor mix that I remembered...and made me go through every note, in my head, the other day.

I'll second that.

...and the aptly named, "not appearing in this film".

I don't know why, but the title of this thread made me think of that line.

As I said in another thread, it's "the band on steroids". It's almost unnatural on some songs -- on "Tumbling Dice", maybe it's before the coke fully kicked in.

I don't see any ill judgments here at all. It is perhaps politically not very correct to say but... the 'steroids' used then seemed really worked out fine...Good stuff...Sad that it is not allowed to use them any more...just talking in terms of artistic results... You can be my partner in crime...

Too slow. Never cared much for the early live versions of TD. Better in 89, actually.

Reminds me of a conversation some friends were having many yrs ago,(like late '70's early '80's, before it attained "warhorse" status). Someone
was wondering why they always did Tumbling Dice live.

In complete seriousness and with a straight face my buddy says "Because they
want everyone to know it is a Stones song and not that w---e Linda Ronstadt's."

Love the Brussels version and Mick Taylor's tone on that is amazing. My question is this---is the version of TD on Brussels Affair the one from Brussels or was it recorded someplace else?

No problem Rooster--glad you enjoyed the levity (also guessing you agree with me in that the best versions are from '78).

Dead on Mr Douglas, nothing pre-89 has been "bettered" on subsequent tours. imo

IMO, the Handsome girls version, which I believe may have been from Memphis was the best I ever heard them do and I love this song, especially live. One of the few songs that always sounds great no matter how many times you hear it.

In fact, if a person had never heard the Stones and asked me to play one song that captured the "essence" of the band, I think I would them Tumbling Dice, and any version would suffice to get the point across. I even find the Love You Live version stellar and somewhat underrated.

The Handsome Girls version comes from Detroit, July 6th,
and yes it's a good one. I think it's Gazza's favourite Stones performance.

Thanks Erik--I can never get those straight. That is a good call by Gazza. Can tell Mick is really fired up by the way he speaks when it's over--just a great great moment in Stones history, which is really saying something.
