Not sure there is much to choose from in the way of sound quality.

I, personally, always loved this show, the guitar sounds, are, well, a little different but the band plays great.

Not as good as Handsome Girls but damn good in it's own right.

"Out On Bail" 3CD Version From VGP without A Doubt Is THE BEST VERSION of this Concert!! VGP 278 3CD Version (also includes FT Worth concert). This should not be confused by other VGP 2CD "Garden State 78" (VGP 253) of the same concert (Passaic) or 2CD (TSP, I think) "Out on Bail".

VGP 278 uses a pristine Vinyl Source of Passaic and the sound is clearly the better of all releases hands down! Pretty sure there was a recent thread here about this one.

i still listen to this one on my original Garden State vinyl - got it about 6 weeks after the show - unheard of turn around time back in those daze...

I orginally got this on vinyl also---X Mas 1978.

I never heard of a 3 cd version of this though based on Macman's comments sounds likesomething worth checking out.

One of my all-time favorite Stones shows--killer version of Shattered and Sweet Little 16. Plus--Mick's comments were hysterical.. "Keith says I can play this if I play quietly, so I will"

yeah - the good ol' daze when ol' mick wasn't worried about getting loaded before hitting the stage - he was clearly buzzed on something

I had a tape of from the vinyl I listened to relentlessly, for years. Finally found a vinyl copy,in very good shape, about fifteen years ago. I prefer it to "HAndsome Girls" although Mick is too often up in the mix. Played on a good turntable I don't a CD version could beat it.

Definitely---could you IMAGINE him sounding like that now? Sounds pretty drunk. He sure was talkative that nite. And to think it was just a few days removed from the Philly show.

no - and, clearly the Stones couldn't have survived had Mick not "matured." but, still, the best Stones was in the era of debauchery when drink and drug enhanced the music, not detracted from it.

I had just bought the TSP CD...to upgrade my tape, when the re-upgraded VGP was released.
I hate it when that happens

Interesting point regarding whether the band would have survived had Mick not "matured". Never thought of it in those terms.

'78 was such a great tour, loved the absence of horns and stripped down arrangements, plus the band sounded great. When people talk about "weaving" I automatically think '78 Tour.

Plus, it was great that they played small venues such as the Capital Theater.

yup - '78 and '72 were the respective heights of the RW and MT eras. no doubt about it - best studio albums and best tours in those years. they could have called it a day after '78 and gone out on an unbelievable high ....not that i'm complaing or whining (okay, maybe just a tad)....

Macman is right. I have both VGP versions and the VGP-278 3CD is the best release
of the Passaic concert ever. Much better than Out on Bail from TSP.

I didn't catch that one, so I tried to search for a picture of that doctor...I have to get a censored search-engine soon.

Agreed. except I would have been CRUSHED if they stopped after '78,especially since I did not fully catch the "fever" til '79.

this isn't about YOU....it's about the Stones and their legacy we're talking about here. sheesh...the narcissism on this board truly astounds at times....

You know, maybe I should not type in front of that mirror! Jeez Louise.......

Still '78 would have been no time to "pack it in"after the BAND (ok? am I on the right page here, Tod? lol) survived Toronto, Keith's addictions and put out their best record since, Exile. Plus, played a tour where they kicked a-- and took names. Can already see tonite is going to be a "'78 nite".

Yes--very interesting that they decided to, essentially, forego arenas--no MSG, Forum or any of the other usual suspects. Also, the whole tour was slightly over a month, unlike the later tours which span years.

Garden State 78 is by far a must have for any Stones fan. The sound quality is amazing but even that pales in comparison to the outrageous banter that occurs during the show.
Jagger is not only drunk but screwed up on something. I love it when he introduces "Sweet Little 16" with something like... "Rod Stewart taught me this song many years ago while I was still in kindergarten."
Not too mention Jagger saying something like, "It's nice to be playing in a theatre like this instead of the usual Barns that we play in... We're going to play a Country song, New Jersey's in the country aint it?"
I wish I could find a version of the Vinyl. Anyone that has one to sell please feel free to email me. I still own the tape copy from my friends vinyl I made in 1980.

My Out On Bail-CD (TSP) sounds like mediocre audience quality. Extremely thin guitars, almost no drum sound and awful balancing. Are we talking about the same show (even though the playing at times is great)?

Are there really released boots from different sources from this show?

I have the cd boot and the lp boots..i like to play the lp more..than the cd....this is a song Rod Stewart told me when we was sitting in the garden!!Sweet little Sixteen!!!Of course he was joking!!

YES !! Me too, I bought a cassette of this show called "Live 1978" ...which I worked out being Passaic and it was superior too all CDrs versions of this show.
I haven't heard of the 3-CD VGP version but have the other 2 popular boots and the cassette still wins hands down!

I also prefer this to Handsome Girls.

My question about this show is....was there ever a version that had Street Fighting Man on it--I believe this was the last song (very rarely played in '78) and if I remember correctly the story oes is that it was not on the boot, because the tape got stolen from the the cassette machine the sound board guys were using during that song.

I do agree that the guitars sound a bit thin, but for some reason, to me at least, that is part of the charm---they still sound cool and the playing is first rate.

SFM on the original vinyl boot is there in partial board, partial audience....and, yeah, that is the story - tape was ripped off "in performance." One of the classic boot stories. there are other good ones, too....

Interesting--I do not remember it being on the vinyl boot I had--but that was a looonnggg time ago.

"other good ones too"---please, do tell........
