Could George Harrison have replaced Mick Taylor?
Posted by: The Sicilian ()

Does anyone think that George Harrison could have fit in as a Stone? Or maybe even Brian Jones if the Stones waited to replace him?

I think he would have been a good fit. Lots of respect in the music world for him. What do you think?

I do admire George Harrison and think he was a great guitarist, but could you imagine Midnight Rambler on Brussels had George played it?

George and Keef had jammed together before and it sounded magical...

In a word...no.

And they also would not have replaced Bill Wyman with Paul McCartney, even though PM's a great bassist.

I don't think he would have stood for their nonsense. He left the Beatles in '68 (albeit briefly) because he was being frozen out of the songwriting. I can't imagine him letting Jagger/Richards burn him.

No. The question about replacing Brian (assuming the timing was right) wold make more sense if The Stones wanted to maintain that same pre-67 sound. George's "look" would certainly fit as would his credentials.

BTW- Is there any footage out there of ANY of the Beatles joing The Stones on stage? I know there are misc. all-star band things out there but I'm talking about a guest appearance with The Stones (ala Clapton)???

Harrison was at the July 13th 1975 show at the Forum. I was sitting in the section just above where he was with Jim Keltner. He left early--waving goodbye to Billy-- as the encore was getting underway.

I later read that the Stones wanted him to play with them for the encore. I wondered if their song selection (Sympathy) had any bearing on his choice not to do so.

He went on stage with Deep Purple in Melburne in the mid-eighties. They did Long Tall Sally as I recall.

I'm sure George never performed with the Stones. He was more a rockabilly guitarist.

I don't think his style would have really fit the Stones unless they decided to cover or write those kinds of tunes.

Oh no. He would not have tolerated Mick 'n Keef's stingyness with credits.

I think not, simply because of the rivality between the Beatles and the Stones which was very much present at that time!! But, also, I think he doesn\'t fit in musically.

George would've been an interesting add to The Stones. It's hard to talk about because we never heard it really. But lets, for arguments sake, say that George actually replaced Brian and that Mick Taylor wasn't even in the picture. We wouldn't have got CYHMK, Moonlight M or Sway (And some others). Sure George would've put his mark on them since he was more of a songwriter than Taylor. George's playing is also more defined than Taylor's. We got what we got though. Not that I think that Taylor is missed these days, but he was the interesting add back in the day. As was Ronnie after MT left.

aaah, I'm glad that noboy was fooled by my fake Shearer/Ferrante post. honestly, besides that history is written and cannot be changed I dont think that Harrison would have felt comfortable in the Stones. I can hardly imagine Some Girls done with Mick Taylor in lineup. But an album like Some Girls with George Harrison in lineup I can imagine even less. if George replaced Brian Jones the band would have taken a total different direction, means: no Stick Fingers, no Exile.

That would have been just a bit beneath Mr Harrison

I think Charlie, Keith, Mick & Ronnie make an exelent replacement for the Fab Four.

George Harrison was so glad to gtet out of the Beatles he was hardly likely to jump on board with the Stones. A more likely fit (both times) would have been Eric Clapton.

With repsect to all parties, no way.

So some are saying that George would have been a perfit fit for albums like Their Satanic Majesties Request, Aftermath, Let it Bleed, etc... but not for more harder rocking albums like Sticky Fingers, Goat Heads Soup, Exile, etc...

Because... he couldn't turn it up?, not his style?, If Mick and Keith write the songs and set up the licks, don't the others fill in the rest? Look how the Stones have evolved over the decades.

He was one of the top 5 songwriters in rock/pop, but to answer your question - NO!

No, because GH couldn't play the blues, that's a fact.
He was soul-less guitarist.

Chav Watch is on the money. Anyone who knows anything about George Harrison knows that he was one of the few rock stars who genuinely despised the limelight. It would then seem illogical joining The Stones after The Beatles. The Travelling Wilburys were a joy for George in much the same way I suspect The Rhythm Kings are for Bill Wyman. Low key.

It's also no secret Harrison was bullied to an extent by Macca. I wouldn't imagine he'd have much of a free hand under Mick/Keith.

Innocent thread, always fun to speculate on these 'what ifs...' but it was never going to happen and it certainly won't now. Let's put it to bed.

George's guitar work is under-appreciated, but I don't think he would have been a good fit for the Stones.

He actually had the Stones' "look" and could have played some great rockabilly stuff with Keith, just don't think he was as interested in being a blues man.

Sure, his lead guitar work on Yellow Submarine and I want to Hold Your Hand. Is the greatest ever!! LOL
