Studio version for me. Good as it is live, I don't think it can ever recapture the glory of that version on Beggars.

Ya Yas!

I like 'em all. I like the original, the awsome YaYas version...and many of the subsequent live revisions of the song.
I like the sort of hybrid version on Stripped too.

Beggars. The crunch in that acoustic guitar can never be repeated.

I'm with paulywaul.

Love the sound and story of keith's guitar, the shehani, the sitar.

it's a tough call for me too........guess if i want the primal, raw version - ya-yas..........the studio version has the "magic vibe" with all the layers of instrumentation...and it just chugs along like a train

I might have to listen to half a dozen or so versions tonight...[Any excuse ;^) ]

I one way, GYYYO version rocks better, but in another way, the original version has a certain sound & groove that I've never heard in any other song/performance. The wild piano and Keith & Charlie's backingtrack can't be topped.

1-"Ya Yas" version
2- 1973 version
3- Licks Tour's version.

I like all of them more than Beggar's

YA YA'S All the way, l love the ending.

the orig... never get tired of that intro. I like to imagine it going on for like 15 minutes, with a new acoustic guitar coming in every time around, so that by the end there's an army of guitars strumming to the tribal drums.

I also like the relatively few '78 versions... charlie plays the same beat he uses for every other song in the set (sound familiar?) and it gives it a coked-up disco vibe.

I vote for BB.

Ya-yas is great, but I love the BB version each time I hear it, from the opening chord with that ringing guitar sound. Pure timeless magic.

What's so good about this song, and the way they recorded it in the studio and played it live, is the fact that they are so different, yet so good, and it's almost impossible to choose.

But I'd say the studio version is the most special to me. The way they made it sound, the intro and the outro, it's all incredible. Unlike some songs from the same era, which were taken to a higher level on stage (Midnight Rambler, Live With Me, YCAGWYW, Love In Vain, Gimme Shelter), the studio version of Street Fighting Man (and Sympathy for the Devil too for that matter) really stand up against the blazin' live renditions that followed, in both uniqueness and power. That's one of the reasons Beggars Banquet is my favourite Stones record -- because it's so unique in sound and production, and totally impossible to recreate.

But they all really complement each other, that's the best thing.

SFM is a perfect song to go along with the question in a thread a few weeks back... studio or live...

It's an old question

Licks? Is this the same as the opening NY on 40 Flicks?
Both YaYas & the studio are perfect. Can't choose between them

You can't compare studio to live.... you can compare different live versions but the live versions can't capture the controlled studio environment (overdubs, multi-tracks, acoustics, etc).

Well, you can certainly compare different impressions and musical experiences from listening to songs, regardless of how the music was created. Then of course, if we're talking about different artists' and producers' merits, etc. etc., it may be relevant to discuss recording conditions and stuff.

A LIVE version is just "one shot it" each time where in the studio they can work it for weeks, months may be years with different takes and remixes until they get it just how they dream it at the time.

Ever notice, for example that for one, Get Off of My Cloud today LIVE sounds absolutely nothing like the orignal studio version whereas Streets of Love and other ABB tracks sound almost exactly LIVE as they did in the studio?
That's because of time/era and other factors such as different musicians are playing the song now that did then and also the instruments used to play it.

Well.I have always thought that the studio version is one of the best studio cuts in the history of rock and roll.Live version is awesome as well but it fails to capture the special sound of the studio version. It is the greatest thing The Stones did in studio,it proves that the stones could be studio wizzards on the same level with the beatles or Brian Wilson, at times.

As great as the Ya Yas one is, I vote for the studio because it has alot more going on--just an assault of sound.
