During the last year the Stones disappointed me more times than in the last 20 years
Posted by: TooTough ()

Well, been a fan since 1982, when I started loving them at age 14.
Seen them 42 times.
Always was defending them against a n y criticism by others
(mostly by people who don´t know anything about them).

When I was compiling some Top 10 lists for my first homepage in 1998
(best 10 studio songs, best 10 albums etc.) I also did a Top 10
disappointment list about things that annoyed me:

In 1998 it read as follows:

>>>My flop ten:

1. Keith´s broken ribs in May 98 (Nightmare Part 1)!

You could have been dead, man!

2. "Flashpoint"

3. The "Dirty Work" album!

4. Like A Rolling Stone in Europe 98/99 again and again and again ...!!

5. Keith ´s reduced background vocals since 1989!

6. Ronnie´s cancelled background vocals since 1989!

7. The side-musician-army on stage! No one of ´em is English.
(Hard for a fan of a British band!)

8. The Urban Jungle Tour: too many people on stage, two keyboards (Matt Clifford!), weak guitar sound, no edges anymore.

9. No "Ladies and gentlemen: The Rolling Stones" - intros anymore!

10. The sometimes much too standard setlists! <<<

Well, 10 disappointments over 16 years of being a fan. Quite normal number.
Most of that is musically, about their overall sound.

But the last year really proved that something is wrong in Stonesland, musically or soundwise there wasn´t much change.
During the last year there
happened so many bad things between BAND and FANS (incl. me). 20. At least.
I won´t compile all the things that disappointed not only me,
just check the archives, there is loads of disappointment around here.

Apart from cancelled shows which obviously dissapoint what else is there really? Keith has an accident, jagger has a few throut problems?
Other than that we've had a huge tour, new cd, Rio, Superbowl, now a Scorsese film etc. etc

And please don't rattle on about setlist.......

If I had ten downssides on my list and zero upsides then I would do a decition and find another band to follow.

I like the way Keith breaking his rib can be a dissapointment.... like he meant to?

I have seen the Stones more on this tour than any previous tour... once or twice using ingenuity not a ticket to get in! Ridiculous ticket prices... another story...

The scale of the Rolling Stones production and the performance energy is as big as ever. The Stones themselves appear to still be enjoying themselves when they play. They've recently released a studio album that has some really great stuff on it.

Besides not getting to see them at the Beacon, when I REALLY want to... I do not feel like the Stones have been a disappointment this past year and a half. They are STILL working / playing after all these years... that's admirable, IMO.

As for cancelling AC... I guess that at least they did what they could by re-scheduling.

ablett, I surely had fantastic moments and shows especially
during the last 4 years, and there were great Stones shows/
moments on this tour, but I´m talking about things I can´t
excuse anymore and can´t understand.

It´s beginning with neglecting ABB (a great record) live //
going on with exorbitant ticket prices in Europe (Germany
especially) // therefore not-outselling the shows anymore
(that really hurts) //Keith´s stupid accident (which was just foolish
behaviour) prior to a tour // no mature excuse by him // cancelling
shows in Europe // while having another US tour in mind // playing
China not for the Chinese people (why not for free in a field)
but for Western employees // doing a show for a politician (no matter what colour) //
RS.COM as part of the Rolling Stones // making clear that the US is the main
concert market for them (market in it´s meanest meaning) and even
there @#$%& with their "customers" formerly known as f a n s (Atlantic City)
etc.

In one point there are sometimes 3 or 4 others (for me). Just take the
high ticket prices in Germany: By charging that much they didn´t sell
out // not selling out means "not successful anymore" in the press //
they were keeping young fans out // they were criticized by general
rockfans I know ("Opera prizes for the wealthy!") And I just couldn´t
defend them anylore which was just another disappointment.

Ok, lets break your comments down:
Most gigs had x3 ABB songs
Ticket prices..... try Madonna et all. Supply and demand. Aint this one of the highest grossing tours ever? Don't wanna pay don't go.
Keith accident. Does anyone really know what happened? Your assuming he was drunk? Hows many 63 yr olds have accidents?
Shows in europe were cancelled due to illness? How can that be helped?
Can you imagine the Chinese authorities allowing an open air gig for 'the people'. Blimey they still restrict what the stones play????
A show for a politician ie: Clinton who is no longer president but a pretty damn good campaigner for global issues?

And finally.... aint the Stones always been onwe of the highest ticket priced gigs going back to the hallowed 70's? Want the best pay for the best!

I'm determined to enjoy them while ever they're still around.

This band have probably given me more pleasure over about 35 years than anything in my life other than my wife and family.

I don't perceive them to owe me anything.

So they aren't perfect or immortal. They're not immune from happening shit... and might not always make the right decisions in every situation.
Which of us can claim to be any different ?

It is pretty bad when their hardcore fans spend thousands of dollars to fly around the world to see them, and the band cancels gigs so they can do a movie shoot. The "hard working people" end up losing tons of money & vacation time just so the Stones can do as they please. It's rude & it really shows what the Stones think of working class people...they urinate on them.

Some folks will be paying off their credit cards for the next year & have no vacation time left. What do they have to show for it? A black eye!

@ tootough

i'm 100% with you.

the band lost a lot of their credibility in the last months. The US fall tour is just a joke - playing in ridiculous places. They've become a vegas act in their old days. Did they ever need three guest stars in their set? Playing for an Ex-president- ha they're not more than a stopgap (or a jumping jack) for this man in between his parties. Cancelling shows just for being a part of this and making a dvd- they made good dvds before. who needs martin scorsese?

they should just concentrate on their music and fans.

Your a clown!!! Just think how disappointed you will be when they stop touring or god forbid die. You @#$%& people always complain about something or other. Its boring. Go follow some other new band that has more edge and tries to be like a band like the Stones. Or better yet just go away or likes aren t needed you feral wank!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RDNZL believes that any vocal discontent should be stifled. He is simply a fascist...so ignore him.

P.S. He would pay Jagger $1,000 to fart in his face as well.

P.P.S. The word is "you're" nor "your".

Maybe it´s your way of dealing with it. From what band
did you move on to the Stones?

bv Wrote:

bv, not the first time that you just ignore what fans think. Maybe
you´d like a board where everyone nods and claps to anything the Stones
do. You don´t believe that everything I wrote was heartfelt (fueled by
passion for this band)? All you can say is "find another band"
or (as in the past regarding the ticket prices) "then don´t go"... that
is even more disappointing.

The reason that you don´t even agree with one of the listed disappointments
shows that you have lost the touch with the normal concert goers on this board who just can´t afford /don´t have the luck/time to see lots of the shows
of a tour as you have.

3 out 19 songs of a setlist? Not enough. Every @#$%& band
promotes the new stuff by @#$%& playing them.

I´d rather be it the most attended tour ever (not by playing
for free at a beach of course). Who @#$%& cares if it´s the
highest grossing? Only accountants like Cohl and Jagger.

> Don't wanna pay don't go.

Yawn.

Then it´s even more disappointing. We were treated
like idiots by RS.COM and the Stones when that happened.

Due to stupidity (the palmtree story was the excuse then).

> Can you imagine the Chinese authorities allowing

I don´t want to play there at all as long as Chinese Democracy
is just a rumour as GnRs album.

> A show for a politician ie: Clinton who is no
> longer president but a pretty damn good campaigner
> for global issues?

He is still a politician. His wife can be President one day.
So the Stones are involved in that campaign. I just don´t
like the idea, though I like Clinton more than any Rep.

> And finally.... aint the Stones always been onwe

If they´d charged half the price of the most expensive tickets
this summer, they would still be the most expensive act (- playing
to packed stadiums)

Whats up kemo sabe? I thought maybe you got shot in a drive-by. I was getting really worried. A fascist. That is a laugh. Fascism has been long gone. Put down the crack torch bro. All I have to say is stop spending the money if your upset. I have a life, I would never spend a grand on a Jagger farting in my face. Your clueless. In fact, that sounds like something you dream about while your crack high is at its peak. Stay young and stay high poofter.

Lows of the so called "Bigger Bang" tour:

- Only 7 songs off the album have been played live, one of them only 2 times and other perhaps a dozen times.
- The only song that mixed up the warhorse section, "Out Of Control" was left out 2 months after the tour kicked off.
- Especially the shows outside the US featured mainly songs that have been played many times before - see European setlists 2006.
- 16 shows ouf of a total of 35 in Europe were cancelled due to Keith's palm tree accident or Jagger's laryngitis (I think that most of the shows were cancelled because they charged astronomically high ticket prices)
- The ticket prices are a shame (Please no more "If you won't pay, dont go"s)

Aint it strange how bitter a few can get??? And can't have a rational discussion without using swearing???

Aint it time a few on here lost the temper some where else cause they obviously can't bear the Stones anymore? Go ridance I say!

Few point TooTough
1. So this aint one of the highest attended tours? I don't recall many empty stadiums (yes thats STADIUMS)
2. Do RS.com et all really owe of few obsessives on here ANY explanation. A man has a serious accident and you demand answers? And doesn't keith claim any credit for recovering so quickly and then going back on tour? Lesser mortals would have cancelled the whole tour!
3. Getting ill is stupid? How? Jaggers throat problems are stupid?
4. Clintons not an active politician anymore but a successful campaingner for Global issues?
5. Ticket prices - even you yourself state they although expensive they still play to "packed stadiums" so why on earth would they want to charge less? As i said, supply and demand.

You want disappointment?

Try growing up in the 70's--right after the Golden Age ended--hoping, HOPING that they would get back in the groove and have another JJF through Exile run again.

It didn't happen. But in the end it's OK. I learned to live with it. Plus, they had a couple of new peaks here and there along the way.

I found out that that's just the way life goes.

I don't have any problems with the Stones anymore. You know why?

I have No Expectations.

Hi Too Tough,
I know what you mean...it´s really hard being a Stones hard core fan these days..but do we have a choice ?!
I mean...we have to get through it somehow...and hope that things won`t get worse in near future..

by the way...not playing one single song from ABB must be a kind of world record...has it ever been before that a band is playing a live tour and does not play one single note from the title album which gave the tour title ?

I read in that new Stones photo book a quote from Oldham that said that the Stones just were going to last a few years and this was back in '66 and they are still here. Don't go to the shows if the tickets are too high go see the White Stripes, don't buy the CDs spend your money on something else. The Stones as a band has been around for a long time, I was in high school when they started and over the years, they have got me rocking more than a few times. The only thing they owe ME is a good show, which I have gotten quite a few times. Hope to see them at Dodger Stadium, might be the Last Time. Didn't see them in '81, no dough but now if I have dough I am there. I worked in a night club for about 7 years, so I saw a lot of great shows for free, so paying to see the Stones and anyone else I go see now is all right. Chill People. Just remember that everytime you see the Stones, through the madness, the mess and the craziness, each night there will be one song where they hit that note and for the that fleeting second they are still the greatest Rock and Roll band in the World. That's worth all of the nonesense because when the Old Boys go.....it's gonna be like that George Jones song "Who's Gonna Fill Those Shoes?"
