Mick wasn't very keen on the whole cage idea. You see him in FF say: "Is it THE CAGE"? Some guy answers: "No, but it's in danger of being the cage". :-) I've only seen it that sort time in FF.
I wonder when show-elements in Stones concerts began to get "out of control". I think the first real show element was the inflatable penis 1975/76. When I saw them 1990 and watched Mick beating the eggs of the giant plastic dog, I asked myself if I was in a Stones-concert or in a Kiss-show. They seem to have recognized finally, that those effects are a bit childish.

Not quite sure because it was his idea on the No Security tour. But after a couple of shows, he sacked the cage. And that was a great move because the cage was such an ugly thing, such a cheap Vegas-style gimmick, well...it did not fit the Stones. The giant blown-up and confetti-spitting penis in the 70's was offending at least (well, for the time)...but the cage was just disgusting.

The cage, the penis and the '89-'90 SFM dogs were very, very lame IMO.
i dug the dogs more than those inflatable wimmin, actually; and the UJ logo dog is cool and amusing.

technically it wasn't renamed. it was a different tour. VL was the first world tour; before that they always had different names for what are now legs of marathon tours (even if the names were just "1981 North American tour" and "1982 European tour")

I agree, but I did like the giant Honky Tonk Women in '89.

I think part of the problem was that they thought the Steel Wheels stage wouldnt work quite as well in Europe because much of each concert would take place primarily in daylight, so they decided on a new stage concept
Put Ronnie in a cage, give him a bannana and a tree limb to sit on, and suspend it over the audience while he plays "Monkey Man." It would be even better than the cherry picker or the giant penis.

there's also a story that Keith kidnapped the cherry picker one night ... i think both stories are urban myths.
You don't have to agree that everything the Stones do on stage is smart or great. I think it is pretty stupid that Keith is promoting cigarette smoking on stage, knowing it will result in thousands of people copying him, with all that is follows from smoking. It was not "smart" of Mick to say that Regina rhymes with vagina. Schoolkids might find it funny but we are in the 30's 40's and 50's you know. The cage was silly. Period. I have the right to that opinion. Mick agreed in fact. Making brand new guitars look old by putting lots of scratces into them is ok, part of the show. Not important for me, may be for others. I am mostly into the show, the music, straight visuals, the band, the songs, their smiles, the surprises, the fans and crowd around me, most of it in fact but not every single detail. May be I like 80% of it or may be even 90%, but I resere the right to ignore the 10% or so I think is not is my favorite stuff. Like smoking on stage, commericial touch where special t-shirts and atm queues are larger than anytime, junk food and small beers only sold at over-priced outlets and so on. But overall I enjoy every show. A lot.
