I am thinking about buying a wah wah pedal. Any recommendations? Thanks in advance.

Ronnie's got a Crybaby.

I prefer the sound of a Vox.

Best in the market is the Fulltone Clyde Deluxe. Best thing is that movement of the pedal is longer, so you can reach both deeper and higher. Second there's three settings: "shaft", for that 70's funk sound, "Jimi" for a true '60's Vox sound, and "wacked", for an aggressive Cry Baby sound. To my ears, the Jimi setting simply is best sounding Wah on this earth. The components used in this wah are the best available, Fulltone even makes his own Fasel inductor, which is the heart of the pedal. There quite expensive, but they're worth it. Second best is the Vox wah, and I never liked the Cry babies. Old ones from the 70's can sond quite good, but the new ones sound generic and mediocre at best. They sound very, very thin. Wood is using a Cry baby, but he is using a rack mount version, which is something completely different.

Mathijs, where does the little "meeowing" one used by Terry Kath in albums like "Chicago VI" fit in there? I HATE that particular sound!!

I love Jimi's though, ans also the one Frank Zappa used to play (circa '71): a Vox one too I imagine?

Thanks for your explanations!

Jimi used both Vox and Cry babies, but all were adjusted by Roger Mayer to sound it its best. The tricks Mayer did to Jimi's Wah are incorporated in the Clyde Deluxe by Fulltone.

I can't beleive that anyone never heard of Terry Kath from Chicago. Chicago is still putting out music to this day. You never heard of 25 or 6 to 4? Come on it will do you well to listen to all kinds of guitarist. Jimi hendrix even said that he Kath was a better guitarist than he was. Kath died of an accedental shooting many years ago but beleive me he has left his mark as a great guitarist.

Well, the name Terry Kath didn't ring a bell here either,
but yes - I know the the song "25 or 6 to 4"

Thanks for all the comments. Regarding the Vox wah, are you guys referring to the "Vox Wah V847", or are there more models available?

Terry Kath using wah-wah + within Chicago = Chicago's guitar player

I've used the Crybaby for years and have always found it to be superb. I've tried out lots of others (inc the Vox and the Fulltone) but have never found them to be my cup of tea. The thing with most wah wah pedals is that you need a good technique to get a good sound. Some guitarists don't have that technique (e.g. Clapton) and just wag their foot up and down instead of getting real expression out of it.

The crybaby allows as much expression as I need and I know exactly what it does to the sound. The difference in sound is kind of like the difference in sound between an old tele and a new 7 string ibanez metal guitar. The ibanez has a broader range and is made from all the latest materials, but I still prefer the old tele because it lets my personality come through.

There's nothing wrong with any of the other wah wahs but listen to what YOUR ears tell you and not what someone else says is best!

Good luck.

I use a Boss rocker wah for almost 30 years and I never felt
the need to switch, very solid
