What's you source for this rumor? I've heard nothing of the sort. I know that I personally spoke to Rick Rubin on August 31st as he was leaving a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert at the Forum in L.A. and asked him if the rumors were true that he was going to produce the new U2 album. he said to me that he hoped to do it, that he'd really like to. He didn't let on to me that in less than a week he would actually be producing U2, though those sessions were not for their next album. I know Rubin is up for producing them, but he's pretty busy now producing the new Metallica album.

The reality is that U2 recorded for a little over a week with Rubin, starting just over a month ago in London. They had a very short window of time to do recordings and got the 2 new songs recorded. Shortly after they had to devote time to promoting their book and performing their new single in New Orleans on Sept 25. Within a short time, they have to start rehearsing for the 5 week leg remaining on their Vertigo tour, which will take them through December 9th. They won't have much time to even consider any more serious recording until January, because they are just too busy until then.

The only quote I've seen is The Edge commenting on how it's only in the very beginning stages for the next album, but he said nothing of the sort regarding displeasure at the Rubin sessions.

As far as your comment on replacing Chris Thomas on the previous album, it was actually Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton that expressed their displeasure at what was a virtually completed album that Thomas produced for them. As a result of their comments, they brought in Steve Lillywhite and others to record some songs over and new songs as well. That resulted in their album coming out 8 months after it was initially planned for and pushed back the start of their tour for 1 year.

Keith will never do anything with the Winos again. The man can barely handle the responsibility of being a sideman in his primary band - no way he could be the frontman in another. Those daze are long gone....

I don't think Rick Rubin would fit the Stones...Personality issues. I really have no problem with Don Was per se. In any case, tho 2007 would be a great with a new Stones album, given the length of the tour etc I'd guess 2008 is more realistic - if they do another album. Next year is live DVD/tour product, I'm sure. And to respond to one post, just because they ONCE waited eight years between full length studio albums doesn't logically mean that's a pattern!

Well, watch this space. I've had my info from someone who knows Paul McGuinness very well. He/she/it feeds me the occasional Yoo Poo tidpit, which I had no use for until now.

Watch this space regarding the new "Best Of", then we'll talk about Rick Rubin and the next Yoo Poo offering.

So, in other words they scrapped the Chris Thomas album like I said then. You've just put it more diplomatically. Are you a record company PR perchance?

I wish they'd put out a new album and tour behind it, playing 5-6 songs from it per night. But realistically it does not seem that will happen. So given the choice between a new album that they don't adequately support on tour like with A Bigger Bang, or a Licks-style tour where they play the hits and old rarities, I'd rather have the Licks-style tour.

Next year

January-May: Scorsese's film post production with Mick (and maybe Keith) doing some additional work on it.
June-August: European tour
July: European premiere of the film + CD soundtrack with 12-15 songs of the tour.
August: US premiere, Soundtrack release and maybe some additional shows in arenas/clubs during a month.

My 2 cents.

No, I don't work for a record company, I'm just a big music fan of many acts beyond being just a Stones fan. Yes, you were correct that the Chris Thomas sessions were scrapped (though some of his productions do appear on the album) and I was just clarifying your statement that made it appear that Bono was disatisfied, whereas it was 2 other band members who pushed he and The Edge to keep on recording after they both felt they were finished with the album.

It would be nice to have a new album and following a low key small venue tour in Europe and the US. They should keep the venues small and play multiple night stands in major cities to keep the travelling down. Plus they could do what Bob Dylan does and have frequent breaks throughout the tour itinerary to allow for relaxation and minimize stress. At their ages, their kids are more or less all grown up, what else are they going to do except fart around and spend money? Their wives can travel with them so they won't be separated from their family. After the 44 years of the rock and roll life for them, I bet they would be bored not playing music and being retired.

Right you are then.

Anyway, as promised, here's some news about the new compilation. Note Rick Rubin reference.

Surprised they're covering The Skids. Ha, ha!

Ah, by the way, a pal of mine heard the Chris Thomas album and said it was seriously raw, in yer face stuff that would have alienated the "With or Without You" brigade just like "Achtung Baby" did. Shame they didn't release it.

U2 just released a greatest hits album in 2002, now they are putting out another? Talk about spinning your wheels creatively. Even the Stones don't put out hits albums that often.

I'm a big U2 fan and I agree with what you said. This is actually their 3 compilation since 1998, though that one and the 2002 one cover different decades, so there is no overlapping. There's no need for another best of now and that seems to be the feeling of U2 fans on their message boards.

they did a greatest hits album covering the 1980-1990 period and then another covering the decade that followed it...and it included new bonus tracks that were released in THIS decade (Hands that Built america from Gangs of New York etc)

as theyve only released two studio albums in the period that would be covered by a 3rd compilation, it does indeed seem a bit hasty

There were songs from the 2000 release All That You Can't Leave Behind on the last greatest hits (1990-2000), so they've only released one studio album since their last hits compilation.

Upon further reflection, though, they don't have a single disc that covers their whole period, so I suppose this upcoming one is good in that respect. There are a lot of non-hits on the two hits discs; some good and some pretty forgettable.

Then they'd have to do a tour to support it! Charlie has expressed an interest in getting right back on the road, hasn't he?!!!

When and where? Next to Keith's hospital bed? Or maybe on the set of Pirates of Caribbean? I don't think they have written anything new since ABB sessions.
