OT: Eddie Van Halen

What do you guys think? Once a master of guitar playing.. pioneer of metal guitar playing!! Nowadays? He's a wreck.. guitar-wise? His sound is terrible.. what happened to boosting up Marshalls? All modeling now.. I think he's still got the skills. He needs to sober up, get off the drugs!! I wanna see him eatin' banana's on stage!! Get Sammy Hager back.. he's a fantastic singer/songwriter for a band like Van Halen!! And tour again!!

I never understood why the kicked sammy hagar out. david lee roth I could undertand how their would be ego clashing, ect. but hagar seems real laid back.

He has quit drinking years ago and is fighting mouth cancer at the moment!

I think this time it was Eddie's problems.. being in a band with a junky is pretty hard!! Ask the Stones..!

He picked up the booze after his divorce.. he's been cancer-free since 2002.

The consensus is that EVH has an attitooood problem (angry at the World and an rampant contol freak), as Sammy Hagar openly states in this recent and revealing interview.

That's sad to hear! (first part)... and that's good to hear (second part).

Eddie is a very gifted guitarist and musician in general. His technique is legendary and the band was always rocking. But what I have never understood is his problems with his lead singers. Maybe an ego-problem on Eddie's part? As I understand it, Dave Lee Roth is a bit of a difficult character but IMHO suited this band best, with Sammy they were even more successful (and Sammy's got quite a solo catalogue of his own) but that VAN HALEN III album with that EXTREME singer really sucked. I wish they would regain that freshness and party-style R'n'R of their first albums.

Hopefully, they will soon do what David Lee Roth has said is "inevitable" -- i.e. reunion with the four original memebers of Van Halen. But Eddie needs to kick his drinking habit and stop being -- as DLR, again, has said -- in "his own world". During the 2004 tour with Hagar, Eddie was apparently too drunk to play guitar well enough on some shows...

That would be great, but according to Sammy, Dave Lee Roth is not the problem, it's Eddie: (quote from the Interview):

"The fans deserved that. But oh no…but I'll tell you …right now, David is more user friendly than Eddie."

The one solution for Eddie would be if he could do the lead vox himself. That is his big frustration.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

Always loved Van Halen (not so much Van Hagar). Saw them open the Stones show in Orlando in 1981 (yeah, I'm old!). Hate that Eddie is in bad shape from either cancer or abuse. Superb talent even though I've never been a metal man. Alex too.

I read online that EVH did a soundtrack for a porn movie recently. Eddie and porn producer Michael Ninn are apparently buddies.

To donnywas, Van Hagar was not more popular than the Mighty VH era. VH1 and 1984 are both Diamond status, with sales of over 10 million each and the Roth era overall has sold alot more than the Hagar era.

I think the only thing the band can do is do a reunion tour with DLR. Put the egos aside and do one last tour, the one that most fans wanted in the first place.

I really love the 1st 2 1/2 VH albums (side 2 of W&C and EVERYTHING else is very mediocre!) and it's sad to see Eddie degenerating into a drunken mess! He apparently is a horribly sloppy drunk and can be a real ass to be around. Not that I have any personal experience but you see the pics and hear enough stories.

I read/heard it was over a fight where Sammy's wife just had a baby during a period that was suppose to be a "for sure, 100% vacation period" and Eddie started DEMANDING that Sammy come down south (Eddie and other band members live in Southern California and Sammy was up by San Francisco I think) to polish up some unreleased song for the VH greatest hits album I think it was.Sammy said NO WAY with the new baby and all and Eddie said, "get down here or you're out of the band". Sammy told Eddie to F-off and that was it.... Sammy was out and they had that 3rd guy for 1 album. Eddie's an aburbt dude, I was at that ARMS concert (for Ronnie Lane's MS I believe) at the LA Forum when some guy comes up in a baseball hat and goes "hey man, you're in our seats" (didn't say it in a very nice way) since we had snuck up and sat in somebody else's seats I wasn't gonna make a scene (the guy was right, a bit rude but right) so as we left the seats my GF goes,"you know who that was?" and I'm like Some Dude, why, who was it? and she goes "Eddie Van Halen" and I looked back and said "Oh Yeah, he's pretty f-ing rude". It was kinda dark, someone was playing on stage, and Eddie had a hat on and sh*t (plus I NEVER recognize anybody anywhere). I must say he did seem like a wound up guy, expecting me to argue over the seats (they were his - damn good ones too)... Seems like a guy that goes off easy (after 3 lead singers no doubt) Very good guitar player but the greats were on the stage that night.....

A sad case. Eddie van Halen used to be cool. He helped make some pretty good records. Now he's doing porn.

According to Mike Anthony (bassist), he's the one that got Ed and Sammy back together to release the greatest hits album and tour. He didn't even play on the three new songs on the album! He seems to be in a similar situation to Ronnie, being a go between for the other two.
He is/was touring with Sammy this year on Sammy's solo tour.

I also read about Eddie providing a soundtrack to a porn movie.
Nothing against porn (I like it!), but this is the bottom of the pits for Eddie.
Pathetic and sad.

Re: OT: Eddie Van Halen

they should have the bass player michael anthony sing all the damn songs. he's got a killer voice. he sings 98% of the backing vocals.

They need a "real" singer, I think. Michael Anthony can sing(and Eddie's not too bad either) but that would take all the energy out of it.

I personally think that Van Halen's guitar playing is soulless...he's all technique and that may impress shallow "fans" but not this one...try Peter Green for some serious soul AND technique...Peter can STILL play circles around VH and he ain't near what he used to be.

Imo,
1. Eddie VH created (maybe) the first unique guitar style and sound after Jimi Hendrix. Revolution number 2. (And it was a strat again). VH kicked ass. A real rocknroll band. Eddie ruined his knees on stage cause they were too wild. Dig his:
HOT FOR TEACHER LIVE

2.
Eddie drank too much. Just like Keith. Drunk on stage. Still, they/he rocked. They big comeback in the 90s:
JUDGEMENT DAY LIVE 1991

3. After that they all lost it. Eddie looked real sick. (Balance Album) He sobered up, got sick, drank again etc. I am sad it happened that way. But they all leave behind great rocknroll history. Wonderful songs.

I saw Van Halen on the 2004 tour a few times. When Eddie was sober he was brilliant. The last show i saw you could see him drinking wine out the bottle behind the stage and he just jammed the entire set, he appeared to have forgotten the music and how to play properly. The other band members including his brother gave him bad looks throughout the show and you could tell they were pissed at him.

I always liked the original Van Halen. Van Hagar had a few good moments but I was never crazy about them, although Sammy seems like a cool guy. Saw them in '91 or so and the entire band seemed drunk out of their minds - a very sloppy show. I'd like to see Eddie get it together and patch it up with the other three original members and tour.

Here are some portions of a whacked out interview Eddie recently did on the Howard Stern show. The lowlight has to be where he implies he might reform Van Halen with himself, his brother, and his 15 year old son. I'm sure we'll all be rushing out to buy that one. [www.rollingstone.com]

I had the good fortune to catch the Mighty Van Halen in concert 1984. It was the Monsters of Rock tour, with Mötley Crue and AC/DC. Two of my favorite bands at once (And no, it´s not Mötley...)
Here more sad proof of Eddie´s decline, with some guy:

Really sad to see how one of my heroes, and the most innovative guitarplayer since Hendrix is going down the drain.
Maybe Eddie can play Keith´s dad in Pirates Of The Carribean 4? sad smiley

Here is a link to his "porn"videos, altough no nudity:

Noisy garbage, that's what I always thought about Van Halen's "music".

Vapid, stupid sh*t designed to sell plastic product. Even more worthless than the worst of the Stones recordings post 1980. EVH a guitar genius? Don't make me laugh. He couldn't hold Hendrix' can of lighter fluid.
