'...during love in vain he plays more notes than both guitarists combined.' - straycatblues73

Bill could always be counted on to find a point to insert one note, the right note.

Sure he's sorely missed.
My guess is he missed the R&R.

Surprised no one mentioned "Satisfaction". The line he does that creeps up and down supports the guitar riff and Charlie's great drumming. Classic Bill. Miss the old guy something fierce.

have sometimews wondered about this base line
the rythm chords e e e a susa a
the riff going b b b c# d d d c#
and the base going like e e e a b b b a ?

intesting and teasing base line

Exactly. The "A" harmonizes with the "C#". It would have been easy to repeat the guitar riff, but Bill came up with something that made the song much better,

It took me years of knowing this song to where I actually looked to figure out what was going on, and made it so unique. Because zillions have covered the song, no one gets it like the Stones. The song in E, going to A, then has the riff being played in B - C# to D. So where the riff rests for a minute on the high note, you already have a D over the A chord.
Bill's Bass is playing E to A to B. So he rests on the note B, under an A chord that already has a D on top.
B and D ringing on top of the A chord is a strange choice to work in such a monumental simple riff.

I read where Bill Wyman played upright Bass on "Factory Girl".

The best thing Bill did with the Stones was that rythm section with Charlie on the 78' tour.

I would like to mention Come On; an atypically clear part with fast eights.

Bill and Charlie combo playing Cherry Oh Baby is one of my favorite - sort of "Dunlopillo mattress" feeling

Also, like the few seconds in Sympathy for the Devil 1969-1970 betwen Richards'solo and Taylor's licks, when there only Bill and Charlie

He played killer bass on Fool to Cry.

Bill has fallen into shadows I think because of players like John Enthwistle and Paul McCartney. He was never a show-off but always played steady and creative stuff in the background. Just like Charlie he is a fine musician that fitted the Stones perfectly. His playing on Satisfaction, Mother's Little Helper, 2000 Lightyears From Home and JJF always bring a smile to my face. It's great.

I also regard Bill highly because he hasn't forgot what Brian did for the band and their music back in the days. It's very nice to hear the other side of that story and not only the hatred bashing.

His part on Satisfaction is pure genius. No Entwistle, McCartney or Pastorius or whoever could have ever come up with that.

Other than all his wonderful playing, the best thing he did was leave. Apparently he'd been tired of it all for a while, but knew by the early 90's their best was behind them, WAAAAAY behind them, and it was time to stop.

Too bad the others didn't.

No doubt. The bass line on Satisfaction is essentially a countermelody to the main riff. Without the bass line, the riff seems incomplete.

Ol' Perky wasn't flashy, but he was a consumate team player in a band that's all about team playing. He always seemed to find the right note at the right time. Check out the SACD version of Ya-Yas.

We took Wyman for granted.
I was just listening to 76 Hague; new source, I think. But my point is on "Hand of Fate" Bill is practically solo-ing. One thing that we never get from DJ is the way BW would ride the hi-register in a rock song. just root notes and 5ths, but doing the hi octave too. It fit very well, and was more complimentary to Keith and Ron's style than DJ.

When they went far out there Bill was the last thing holding them to the earth.

Just listening to the well known 10 minute outtake of Whip. At the end, the guitars fade to the background a bit, and you hear mostly Charlie and Bill. It's amazing -Charlie's playing the most simple 4 to the floor pattern, and Bill plays the major A and D notes with added fifths. But the way they interlock is just encredible. Charle's 4 to the floor has this encredible swing to it. How can you play four bass kicks straight, and make it swing? Then Wyman skips the '1', and emphesizes the '2', transfering the rythm section from rock to roll, more swing or disco than anything else.

I really doubt anyone ever realized how fantastically good they where at that time.

Mathijs
