That's a great one,
vinyl, CD or computer-files, Lukester ?
You seem to have a lot of artists represented in this thread.

Whassup Erik?.....this is from vinyl, from Joni's appearance on The Last Waltz.....although I especially like her studio version (from Hejira) featuring a "lead bass guitar" by my now deceased friend Jaco Pastorius on fretless bass.

Your deceased friend? I'm sorry. You knew him in 76 too ?
Hejira is a fine album, it takes several listenings to get into it, though.
I've got a video of Joni Mitchell where she skates on the ice, just like the Hejira cover.

Erik, I'm taking liberties with the word "friend." Jaco played basketball with me at the NC State University campus one afternoon in Raleigh while he was waiting to perform with Weather Report that night. I think that was in 1977, maybe 1976. I also met him in Japan in 1978. How about his bass sound?

His bass sound shines through on that album. The bass player Joni used later on, Charles Mingus, did his best to copy your friend's style at the 79 tour, that's for sure.

Lukester, cool about Jaco -a helluva bassman. Check your e-mail.

Listening to Marshall Tucker "24 Hours At A Time". Toy Caldwell is smoking the frets.

Have my iPod on shuffle for Clapton...listening to all the stuff I have by him on shuffle. I just saw him over the weekend in Singapore, and man what a show. Really, he was playing like the early 70's with a crack band. Derrick Trucks on slide and the first four songs he opened with were from Derrick and the Dominos! Whew what a show!!!

"Got lost when I found you" one Ron Wood. Anyone know that Usher tune I had on earlier?
Luke I love me some Joni Mitchell, especially "Coyote" and Hejira. But I also got a good bit of her later albums and they suck so bad. her early on stuff is excellent though.

Yes, a lot of the stuff from 80s and the 90s, is actually unlistenable.
I think she did her best work from Blue to Hejira

Erik, Charles Mingus died january 3rd of that year, so it must have been another bass player - unless it was a 'minissima tour' of New Year's Day and the day after ;-)

Mingus was a jazz legend: He was a composer, bandleader and giant on the bass who liberated the instrument, bringing it to the foreground, playing counter-melodies whil holding the bass line at the same time, thus approaching it like a piano. Undoubtedly he was a great influence on Pastorius. Money Jungle (with Duke Ellington and Max Roach) is a great example of Mingus' style. Feverish and possessed playing by all three of them - one of the great jazz albums of the 20th century.

I think it was Joni Mitchell who approached Mingus and wrote lyrcis to his music on her album 'Mingus', as well as having him play on it. Thus the collaboration.

Hejira is an incredible album, my favourite by Joni Mitchell.

Thanks. My bag. I was thinking about the bass player she used for her 1979 tour with Pat Methony...I looked it up, it's Jaco Pastorius. He's approaching the bass style from Hejira.
