That's excellent!!

Funny, cause I was thinking of you when I poured the whiskey--seeing how you are an afficionado and all.

Told you I am trying to get into this whole jazz thing--I like it--similar to blues seems to sound better late at night.

that's one of the tamer Coltranes - more akin to the great Miles quintet (that he belonged to) in approach. if you don't have it i strongly recommend getting Sonny Rollins' Tenor Madness album...the title track features he and Coltrane trading "fours" in some scintillating duels! sorta the jazz tenor equivalent to ronnie/keef in '78! ha-ha....

hey - you're NOT an afficiando if you're hammerin' down the seagrams....

Will defintely check out the Sonny Rollins--the only stuff of his I know is with those 3 Stones songs though I think his playing is brilliant on them.

Interesting what you say about Blue Train--cause when I first heard it, it reminded me of Kinda Blue--defintely same approach, I actually find it more melodic than Miles.

Any analogy to Ronnie/Keith circa '78 is a seller for me.

As for the Seagrams......I for some reason cannot get down whiskey/bourbon etc. It was a gift from like 2 yrs ago--finally decided to try it. Not really enjoying it pre se, but can't say I hate it either.

I also have some Knob Creek (another gift--lol) laying around somewhere....

Is Seagrams really that low on the totem pole? Shows what I know. I thought it was like Crown--maybe that sucks too--lol

Actually I was referring to Miles in the Prestige label era that preceeded Kind of Blue by a few years. The Prestige label era was by far my favorite of Miles'. Coltrane joined him for a couple of albums late in the Prestige, and many, including myself, count that as perhaps the greatest quintet of the bop period. I don't find much similar between Kind of Blue and Blue Train, actaully. Kind of Blue forged new jazz territory with its "modal" themes. It's certainly masterful but it's among the last of Miles' albums that I can really sink my teeth into.

Tod--never heard any Miles prior to Kinda Blue. The Prestige stuff sounds interesting. Blue Train, to me, has the same kind of "laid back" vibe that Kinda Blue has, as opposed to say Bitches Brew (which actually is not a fave) which sounds much closer to fusion and a little too busy or Love Supreme.

Told ya I am a neophyte on this jazz stuff--lol

you can't go wrong with any of Miles' Prestige recordings. I'd also highly recommend a few of his early CBS ones - Milestones or 'Round Midnight, for instance.

My mom is coming over, so it will be Elvis Christmas Album. Some really good bluestunes in there, among the more cheesier stuff.
