Very sorry, my man. I'm sure that whatever beer-swilling you may do does not incline you toward idiocy.

you're right there, Reverand. in truth, most of the beer isn't actually swilled so much as it is spilled on those around me; as a result, very little idiocy occurs.

Yeah, there would be a great chance of crankin' out two or three back to back obscurities if they just left 'Rambler' out! LOL

VooDoo:

Certainly, to each his/her own and there's obviously no acccounting for taste and all that. But, I do believe you are the first Stones fan I've encountered that has ever talked so negatively about MR. It's just a little shocking, frankly and you should take the reaction you're getting in that light, I think....

In my opinion, this song has held up the best of all the warhorses,if you can call it that,on recent tours.Boston '99 and Hartford '99 were excellent versions.Of course nothing matches Rambler from Brussels but, still the modern versions are still superb on most nights and haven't fallen off like Sympathy For The Devil, for an example, has from 1970.

Cor blimey there are some bummers songs mentioned here by the 'Stones' but 'Midnight Rambler' and Jumpin Jack Flash.
Just two of the songs that totally epitomise the greatness of the 'Stones' in earthy rock & roll and Bluesy style music.

Wow, this has been enlightening, to say the least! Some of these picks blow my mind, and Gazza, I agree. How can ANY Stones fan detest Midnight Rambler? Yikes! But I confess to wearing out my little copy of " Congratulations", the single and flip side of " Time Is On MY Side " which I loved to death also. The 2 cds I cannot even listen to " Dirty Work' and " Emotional Rescue." At least 95% of these collections are worthless to me but there are exceptions like Dance. This was a horrible waste of studio time, IMO. I bought them on vinyl and in cd form so as not to have a hole in my collection but they almost never get played! " INDIAN GIRL"??? OH MY GOD! Enough said.

Oh, yeah, and I also happen to really LOVE " Time Waits For No One" and " Can't Be Seen" believe it or not...a Keith song I love! I'm surprised more folks didn't bash the entire " Steel Wheels" cd; I'm actually relieved because I always liked it very much!
Hey Gazza, do you like " Steel Wheels"?

Re: OK how about most despised Stones song...

The only Stones studio album I can honestly say I DONT like is Satanic Majesties

Steel Wheels hasnt aged well, like many 80's albums...a lot of the songs sound better on those Monitor Mixes that were circulated last month.

Continental Drift, however, is certainly in the top 10 of my favourite Stones songs ever. I also think Almost Hear You Sigh and Slipping Away are absolute gems. AHYS is a ballad which had it appeared on an album 15 or 20 years earlier would be talked about in the same breath as Wild Horses. A song of absolute, sheer beauty. And Slipping Away has perhaps Keith's best ever vocal. Especially in the last verse.

... ill step up from behind voo doo for a moment...gazza touched on it, about that midnight ramblers ya ya's version.. and it isnt remotely played like that anymore and hasnt since it was the center piece theatercal way back, when the belt really came down, the guitars talked, everyone sucked into the same place/space and time, the stones had ya,,,, where the sexual atmosphere they created was that era,... and those of us who have watched this stuff for four decades know the difference thru and thru and recognize its a boring exercise from them, with really no punch or pull, a mass of kinetic static ,, a bad speed ride with no soul,, mick should have the band turned off and do a solo, just himself and harp, id pay five for that...
im also very puzzeled why so many want sway, like thats some special song or something,, like the stones aint dark anymore folks, and dont feel alone if that mess's with yer head, its a problem, i want them to be dark,,,,, ,,
the two versions of sway here in calif. sucked,, an no matter how hungry ya are for stones,, dirty work is a throw away, ask the glimmer twins, what kind of expression would ya expect from them if you told them ya ' i really like dirty work',,, they'd get nervous an call security....

Emotional Rescue is the armpit of the entire Stones catalogue.
There are many others from the last 20 years that I can't even name,
but Emotional Rescue was a complete letdown the day it was released.

Also on the shit-list:

Fool To Cry
Indian Girl
Cherry Oh Baby ( horrible rendition of a classic reggae tune)

Yeah I would have to second that, "midnight" holds up as well as anything live. I would actually say that the studio version is not that inspiring, it is live where it became a classic, and still is.imho

"It's just some friends of mine and they're busting down the door"

Like the U2 song "Bad," I think MR really became something once they started playing it live.

However, the studio MR does have it's own special mood. As I suggested here awhile back, play it and then seque into "Break the Spell." They really have the same vibe--20 years apart.

NO version of "Midnight Rambler" should be "despised." "Indian Girl" would probably be at the top of my list, if only being the first "unlistenable" Stones cut for me. Thank God it was at the end of side one on the record. Made it easy to skip and move on to side 2...

I wish to apologise for my list of songs that I dont like, I left out Jumpin Jack Flash and Sympathy For The Devil. By the way, Keith cant sing and never could. But after all, who am I to judge, the original post was what songs we didnt like, so I just responded with my opinion. I just love this board, it gives me an outlet to talk about the stones, something I cant do face to face with another fan because I dont know any personally. Mores the pity, the Stones have been a part of my life now for 43 years.

That's wild, Gazza, that you like ER and DW ! I think it's just that bit of age difference that determines favorite collections of songs! I love EXILE because I was 18 and it was my first Stones LIVE concert and they features songs from it..not to mention that it IS their masterpiece! I agree with your assessment of AHYS, it has always been a real favorite of mine. Now that would be something to hear in concert.

I've always wondered about this, Gazza - to me the "acid-ness" of CD makes me think this could have fit nicely on TSMR....how do you reconcile this apparent contradicton?

I've never liked Fool To Cry, Gomper and Mother's Little Helper. Time Waits For No One is one of my favourite Stones songs.

I wouldnt go as far to say I "like" Dirty Work. I just dont hate it like some do. Its definitely a weak effort by their standards. Emotional Rescue is patchy, but I love the sound on their records from that era - plus 'Where the boys go' is a personal favourite

Weird thing is that it could have been a much better album as there was enough good material recorded during those sessions

There are some songs on TSMR that I like - both the "2000" songs and Shes A rainbow. All are excellent.

Most of the rest is throwaway trash IMO. I dont have a problem with pyschedelic sounding music, the bottom line is just whether the songs are there or not. On TSMR they quite clearly arent IMO. If I was to pick the 10 worst songs of the band's career, about half of my choices would be from that album.

Continental Drift is simply a brilliantly arranged and structured piece of music. It would have fitted on TSMR OK, but there would still have barely been enough quality songs for an EP

Come on Gazza, even you can not beleive dirty work beyond OHTTB and WU has any listenable tracks?

In addition to those two songs,Sleep Tonight is very "listenable" and the title track is solid until it falls apart with the '80's style attempted rapping at the end.It features some excellent guitar work - the weaving at its best.

Some really great Stones songs mentioned in this thread. I for one cannot understand the hate for Fool To Cry, the best song on B&B and one of their most underrated, if not, THE most underrated Stones song of all time, along with Rock And a Hard Place.

Worst Stones Songs EVER:

Back To Zero ('nuff said)

I Go Wild (overproduced, obnoxious, overrated, alternative stadium rock at it's very worst. Worst song on VL. I don't understand how anybody can defend this song. Face it people, there's NOTHING good about this piece of crap.)

Hold Back (Guitar way back in the mix buried by production, Charlie's drums, and a really mad history teacher = Bad Idea. And after that solo, Jagger sounds like he's been kicked in the crotch with a steel-spiked shoe)

Out of Tears (hookless, meandering, overproduced, made-for-MTV song with everyone on autopilot. Inexplicably loved my most fans)

Can You Hear the Music (All I hear is an idea that should have been canned)

Sing This All Together (See What Happens) (Maybe this would have been a good song had they taken the time to develop it)

I notice that people bash lots of songs from SW and B2B for being over-produced, and praise VL for being stripped-down, yet people don't realize that VL is EVERY BIT AS PRODUCED as SW and more than B2B. It is slick like SW, only it goes for a thick sound in contrast to SW's thin sound.

The difference between those three albums though is that SW and B2B are far, far better albums.

Yes Gazza, VoodooLounge 13 is definitely a ... I don't have a word for it that wouldn't be sensored here. Actually - Jagger is great with the harmonica. And "Midnight Rambler" is one of the highlights of the show. And when the guitars are "speaking" with eachother - like on the best shows on this tour - it's 10 minutes in heaven for this fan!

Most of the disliked songs here are e s s e n t i a l
for the Stones. I feel a bit displaced here when people mention
Casino Boogie, Rambler, Fool To Cry or even Emotional Rescue.

Seems like another generation is taking over.
