the thing about openers that sets them apart is the 'drama' - 'cos you usually don't have any solid idea of what's coming next. That's why Oakland '99 and Orpheum (first theater show for the tour) rate so high for me - not so much a question of performance/execution as it was for the "surprise" element.....

yeah, I think I have that one on disc - fine recording, horrendous performance.

They just walked through the show...just the motions. We've all (well, those of us who have seen more shows than we are years old) seen shows where Mick goes through the motions but Keef is on fire...or visa versa...but this one was 3 guys reading the paper while standing on stage.

Agree with that. I was at all 5 shows in the UK that week and they simply sounded knackered by the time they got to that final one.

The show the night before was so much better

a pity - it always sucks when the great recordings that surface aren't from the great shows. oughta be a law or something....

the 'great' recording from that UK leg is from the 11th June show (the first night). Its almost like a soundboard

uh-oh - then consider me "not impressed" with the last two shows of the tour!

I hope youre not expressing dissatisfaction with something relating to the Stones. Some "muppet" should start a thread in protest!

I remember right when the show ended, a man from New Zealand who I had talked with a bit over the UK tour turned & asked me what I thought. Usually, I'd lie & say "it was great" so as to not deflate their euphoria...but I knew he knew enough to know the difference. I said "worst Stones show I've ever seen"...he responded "exactly what I thought...they were shit tonight". Just glad I got to see them 3 years later & wash that taste out of my mouth.

That said...for any other band, it would have been terrific...but not for these guys.

1 my first show. I had been a fan for almost 10 years. I'll never forget the opening notes of UMT.
2 Never before had I been so close to them. Great to see them in this raw form. Great work by Ronnie on CYHMK and on slide too.
3 Very nice show. some nice songs in there as well
4 I couldn't get in but I followed it on the screens on the Museumplein. Great unplugged versions
5 Great show, huge crowd, people standing on the rooftops of the governement buildings, It was pooring.

promoman! I know exactly what you mean about the opening cords of UMT! Everytime I hear the start of the CD I get a chill! That was a fantastic feeling when they came charging out and the whole damn stadium goes ape shit crazy! The hair stood up on the back of my neck at both shows I saw! That's the shit that makes it for me! No one else has ever done that!
