"Don't Stop": the child of "Start Me Up".

So I finally heard for the first time the early version of "Start Me Up", titled "Never Stop." And you know what I thought I was hearing at first? A early version of "Don't Stop". You could sing that one along with it just as easily as "SMU", at least until it gets to the chorus. Now whether this was intentional or not when Mick "resurrected" his original idea for "SMU" when he did "Don't Stop", but it certainly seems likely.

Myself I know that there have been many times as a songwriter where I had an idea that I quite liked only to see it morph into something different than what I had originally intended. But I would never forget that early idea, and would find myself going back to revisit it later in the hope I could get another song out of it.

Don't Stop is a great track. Hope it doesn't get lost in the Stones history.

"Don't stop" is not a good song for me, too common. In this kind of song I really prefer "highwire"!

SMU was originally a reggae song. I have heard that version but not Never Stop.

That's the one. Never stop. One of the reggae versions of SMU. Or is that the rock version that became Start me up?

In my opinion, Don't Stop gets a bad rap
that it doesn't deserve. I especially
quite like the so called "Hard Rock'
version with the edgy guitars.
Look forward to never Stop.
Thanks for the tip!

The riff is so simple it's boring, perhaps there is a better version live than the record. It sounds like the Stone's trying to do a Stone's song instead of something fresh and new.

Don't Stop got better throughout the Licks tour, at least during the shows I saw. It was hoot when Mick would imitate Keith while he played guitar!

It's the simplicity of the song's main rhythm that makes this song what it is. It's just steady, but nice guitar, Charlie just does what he does best, Mick is sexy and wanton with his lyrics. It's a perfect example of the Stones in their current form.

Hell, it's just a plain great song. Great as a metaphor for the fans (don't stop, and we won't stop), but at the same time it's a great love rocker. Why just the other night after an eventful evening I put this on full blast, hoping that this would not stop.

Just had the exact same observation. I'm sure Keith
would call the songs "cousins", but they're more
fraternal twins.

Don't Stop is very solid as a live tune. See 4 Flicks for confirmation.

Don't Stop is a great live song - half the charm is in its simplicity.

Loved the WoodyCam on the solos too.

Bring it back, boys!

Any Stones song in open-g tuning is a cousin or distant relative . Dont Stop is a boring track if you ask me. A great track no one speaks of in open-g is "Winter".Keith's solo work has some great songs in open-g i.e. "Take it so Hard". Would have been great on a Stones CD.

I like when the four flicks documentery shows them recording dont stop. Mick is telling chuck leval how he doesnt want his part to be pretty, nor coutnry. then chuck says "Just because Im from Georgia doesnt mean I do everything coutnry!".
