opinion of the modern day Rolling Stones

I suspect that the majority of people in this forum are huge Stones fans- although I sometimes think people just come here to bust chops when I read some of the Stones bashing going on in here.

I'm not taking about set list or ticket price complaints- these are valid gripes, but when I hear someone call the Stones a laughing stock just after they released a critically praised platinum studio album and are in the middle of what will probably be the biggest tour of all time, it just boggles my mind.

So I wanted to get some opinions. Which of the following statements do you believe best describes the modern Stones;

1)The Stones are as good as they have ever been.
2) The Stones are not as good as in their heyday, but still the best group on the planet.
3) The Stones are still a good band but not as good as other bands like U2 etc.
4)The Stones are washed up laughing stocks that should run for the hills red-faced- hoping they can emerge from hiding once the laughter subsides.

1 to 2+

Yeah, it is funny... some people seem so intent on bashing the Stones...and really it is like the old saying "people who forget the past are destined to relive it!" So true. I mean there were always certain "fans" who griped as far back as when Brian was fired! And for every tour up to Bridges and No Security they had static set lists, rarely changing songs. That is their style. That is the way they like to play live. They are not a jam band like the Dead or the Crowes (which in my opinion the Crowes are becomming a tad boring with their endless jams and some piss poor covers). The Stones will always piss people off! That is why they are the Stones! And they really don't give a @#$%& if you are mad because they keep playing Satisfaction. In fact they laugh at your anger! So move on, don't see them live. Don't listen to their recent shows and live with your vinyl and keep spinning Out of Time until the grooves melt.
Ok, sure, A Bigger Bang is no Exile, but man it is a great hard hitting disc! And done with such passion. And they are still playing live! And putting so much into it!!!

So I give them high marks for still being out there and pushing rock into a whole new era and emulating their heroes on a scale that never would have been possible for Muddy or Chuck. And come to think of it! Muddy and Chuck consistently played the same sets everytime they toured!!!

1+2 but could have made superior records than the finished product(last 25 yrs) with better song choices and producers. there are too many great songs still in the can.
