Steel Wheels vs. SW Monitor Mixes
Date: August 18, 2006 05:39

Since everyone is diggin' on this incredible find. I thought it would be cool to compare and contrast each, both as whole and song version against song version. Is there anyone who prefers the released version of SW to these outtakes? Personally I couldn't see why, but it would be interesting to see other's opinions. To me the sound is much sharper on outtakes, less compressed and processed sounding, with editing most of these versions,as is, would've sounded great on the released version of SW. So as we seem to repeat over and over regarding the Stones studio work post Exile, what happened? On SW, in particular, it seems the band overproduced these tracks into mediocrity.

The outtakes are much better, just listen to Hold On To Your Hat.

Some of the songs are better on SW.

Could be intersting, if someone has some time to spend on it, to note the differnces between each tracks ( length, missing instruments etc)
Keef singing on Almost hear your sigh is awesome

I like the outtakes much better than the official Steel Wheels, although I can't stand Jagger's barking way of singing, which is even more obvious on the outtakes.

But it's sort of a transition between the nonstop barking on Dirty Work and the bark-less, sometimes yelping of later stuff. I'm glad he can still bark on these tapes.

People,

since the subject was so intriguing, and considered I knew the Stones thanks to "Steel Wheels" (as anybody being around thirty nowadays), I couldn't keep myself from nailing down the comparaison, but you need to have italian reading skills.

Didn't he bark like that from 1972-1989?!

steel wheels is my favorite stones album. i was about 10 when it came out so its the first thing i remember by them. its not their best work but my favorite. anyways i always thought steel wheels was the pinnacle of jagger as a singer. between shes the boss and stripped anything he sang on was fantastic. his voice hit a peak where it was so strong sounding and had a rawness to it yet on the ballads it was still so smooth. he also hit a lot of notes that were pretty high for him and made a lot of cool sounds. he never had the same voice before and its gone down hill after. there was thread i started on who's the greatest singer ever and if jagger's voice was the same most of his career as it was from 1984-1996 he would be ranked a lot higher than i have him ranked now. he would be in my top ten for sure but for right now he's maybe in my top 25.

Keith's Almost Hear You Sigh is PRICELESS...even If I always loved the album track with Mick vocals I was so glad to find out one day it came from Keith during his X-pensive Winos and absolutely shocked when I've heard demo from SW...

listen to 2:18 to 2:32

this is f***ing beautiful bridge...

his vocals on most of DW were atrocious, in the actor chewing up scenery kind of way, (HIWY one of the exceptions) and marred that album greatly

I'm having a hard time processing that mick jagger is only maybe in your top 25 rock singers. I can't think of 25 that hold a candle to him.

Piotr, I hear the same thing as you, Keiths vocal adlibbing on that bridge is so utterly beautiful and soulful...it gives me goosebumps. My Precious Love is a gem, buy AHYS, retransformed to its original Keith version, IMO is the revelation of these mixes. It's stunning.

I like the more natural, less-processed sound of the outtake tracks. Can't say I am with everybody on Keith doing AHYS though. Sounds like a warbling alley cat to me.
