I got an interesting email from Chuck!
Posted by: Buddy Young ()

Hi All,

I sent an email to Chuck and was very surprised to recieve an answer that came straight from the man himself! I haven't got the exact words anymore I sent him, but it's about this:

Hi Chuck,

I was standing close to the B stage in Amsterdam and I was wondering: where I was standing, the sound I heard came directly from the monitors from Keith and Ronnie. Saw that Mick had an in ear monitor. Then after a delay I heard the music throug the main PA and then I heard the echo of the fabulous Amsterdam ArenA. So basicly you've got the same signal three times in different timings. To me, it seems like this could be a real problem. Is it?

(I also mailed him that to a lot os us SOL was the highlight of the show and some other things)

What he then did was really funny. I'm in this duo called Jetlag Overdrive (www.jetlagoverdrive.nl). He actually visited this page, went to the contact page and sent me an email! He must have had a lot of time haha. Here's what he wrote:

Thanks for the message, the
comments and the question. Yes, there are the
delays you describe. I use in ears for the B stage to avoid problems.
But
Keith, Ronnie and Charlie do not. They are listening to their monitors
(Keith's and Ronnie's are especially loud...Charlie is sort of in a
"box" in
his position). It's a tough problem for the main sound....and will
never be
a "good" mix, but our sound man Dave Natale does a great job
considering the
challenge! Best, Chuck

Interestinmg, Buddy Young. now i'm wandering how Darryl plays to all this 'noise', would he have earplugs as well?

Cheers,
Wuudy

In Paris I felt bad for the band, I was right at the back of the B-Stage and it hurt seeing them trying to keep the whole thing together.
It was funny looking at all the techs look at all that mess going on as if it was hopeless ...

The permanent solution: quit the mega insanity!

The simple solution would be that Keith and ronnie would both wear earplug monitors.

Gee, thanks for giving him good feedback about Streets ofShit. We will all have time to take a piss and get a beer this fall.

The song works excellent live.

I know that Mick was showing Keith and Ron the tempo with his hands a couple of times. That also shows that it can be very difficult for them. I agree that in ear monitoring for them would be a great solution. I don't think Keith would want it though.

Yeah, they sometimes have a bit of a problem getting in the rhythm. Then they stop to listen, and play on. It works but it sounds a bit messy.

I would NOT miss the B stage! I find it disruptive...unless of course my seat happens to be near it and I usualy try NOT to be back there! I say, quit the B-STAGE entirely!

So, Debra, you are saying that you would like the b-stage if you have "crappy"?
Well, More than half of the crowd has "crappy" seats so for them it is great! I heard from friends and colleges who were up in the stands and in the back of the field in the Amsterdam Arena that they loved the b-stage! the could see them from up close and it gave a lot of atmosphere!!!!

Wuudy

The B-stage is the best part of the concert for me.
Just some meters away, in the middle of screaming and shouting people, pressing as hard as they can just to get a cm closer. Pure madness, but I love it!

The sound is never good at the B-stage. And it must be hell playing out there.
But it's a good way to come out to the people. Standing 100s of meters away, you get some better glimpse's of them.

I guess it is on the Bridges To Babylon official VHS/DVD Mick has a problem with the harmonica during Like A Rolling Stone. He gives up at the end of the solo.

Maybe a good idea to use earplugs for all of them, so we won't have 2 different speeds of the music...

Well I don't want Chuck 'Tearing it up' - he is a competant keyboardist & level headed, sober (in both senses) guy with good organizational skills - Bill Wyman minus the passive aggressive anger (or musical brilliance that was a building block in the band's sound). What made the ABB shows so fresh for me was how unobtrusive Chuck was compared to Licks or parts of VL & B2B...

Having never seen a club date, the B-Stage in Arenas is the best that I have seen the Stones play. There isn't the horrible delay they have to deal with in a stadium, so they play with a lot of confidence and abandon -- and they are right in each other's faces. Ask anyone who went to any of the MSG shows this year.

I agree that the B-Stage in stadiums (not to mention the ramps which at times put Mick and Keith on opposite sides of the stadium) are not ideal conditions for a band holding a tune together.

beeleyboy are you describing Chuck? If it was Nicky, or one of the 2 Ians I'd agree. Chuck was decent with the Allmans, too, but hardly brilliant boogie woogie, and his subsequent band Sea Level was truly bland '70s fusionoid dreck IMO...

Agree. It's a little messy but so unique. Start Me Up was a kind of joyful bordello in Paris, but the riff and drums were there, on time and could be heard plainly. The audience loved this . This kind of amateurism is welcome and part of the magic of This Band.

Hey beelyboy, that was Billy Powell on the honky tonk Lynyrd Skynyrd piano. Always has been. He survived the crash when the Freebird went down in the swamps of Mississippi...nearly lost his nose, seriously, and he still plays with the band today.

...and beelyboy, as much as I like Chuck and have seen him perform all over the Great South, I also respect the opinion of a man who dosed with Jorma and Jack, who saw the Concert For Bangladesh, and who saw some late 60's Stones gigs....so I support your summation about Chuck and the other supporting musicians. ..and yes, the As Tears Go By synth strings are probably fun to listen to (I haven't heard them yet).
