Catching up on Chuck's diary
Posted by: Limbostone ()

As from the start of the European tour, Chuck has been updating his diary again on chuckleavell.com, starting here: [www.chuckleavell.com]

A good read. Some comments on his song suggestions at the Milan rehearsals.

Ah, thanks. I check it regularly and didn't see that update.
Good read for a boring day at work...

Chuck about Milan:

Keith played better than any of us expected, even if he had a bit of trouble here and there. We put in “Under My Thumb” on the B stage…but much to my surprise, the audience didn’t react to it much…almost as if they didn’t know the song. That was a disappointment, as I had thought it would work really well out there

I would have gone mad if I got Under My Thumb last night..

I think we should all register and persuade him to put UMT back in the Stuttgart set, since the lukewarm reception was probably just a coincedence.

I already registered. UMT was a great performance, should be back in the setlist!

After logging in I left a comment underneath the last diary-entry to say that I appreciate his efforts to keep up a diary while on tour very much.

However, I have no idea what happened to that comment. Is there anything special about this blogging rss etc thing. Can one read it back or read other comments?

I think it an admin has to approve the comments, I posted as well and my comment doesn't show (yet)

That's strange, because during that number in the FOS section it was a great sing - a long; maybe the crowd close to the B stage didn't appreciate the song as much...

Not sure what you find strange or shocking about that. Care to elaborate?

Well, when you're a Lizard you have to care about other members of the animal kingdom. I think that's what that means.

i thought he was hunting Jimmy Carter

no, that would be Dick Cheney hunting live humans

Interesting reading. I still find strange that the setlist is decided between Mick and him, without asking Keith or Charlie. He somewhat depicted him as the master of the group in terms of music direction. Except his politeness with Mick.

They need to let Ronnie and Mick pick the setlist, with a little help from Chuck..

Do you all recognize any musicians in that top black and white photo?

I see, in addition to Chuck, Butch Trucks and Dickie Betts of the Allman Bros. Band, and Jimmie Hall of Wet Willie. The blond guy in the back I think played bass for the Allman Bros back in the late 70's, early 8o's, I think his first name is Dan.

No. Quote from Chuck's diary on the rehearsals in Milano:

"I suggested several tunes to try out…like “Monkey Man”, “Under My Thumb”, “The Last Time”, “Undercover”, “Let Me Go”, “Harlem Shuffle” and many more. We got to some of them and others we didn’t get to. Mick and I had talked about “Streets Of Love” as well…because it had done pretty well here as a single. (...) I was somewhat disappointed not to get to some of the songs I thought would work well, but during the course of the tour we can still make some changes."

There you go. Chuck has more guts and imagination than Mick.

LET ME GO would be awesome ,right out of left field, separate the fans from the tourists..I think Ronnie and Keith would do a better setlist than Mick and Chuck..Probably would pick more new songs..

Do these guys even listen back on their old material? I wouldn't be surprised if Chuck is more familiar with the back catalog then they are.

I'm sure he is but Ronnie from a Early Stones fan perspective would make the random call on some Brian era songs, and some songs from Undercover,Emotional Rescue,Tattoo You,Some Girls, even a Bigger Bang.I feel the era 75-06 is neglected live.Hang Fire instead of Honky Tonk Woman,or Heart of Stone instead of Wild Horses wouldn't hurt anyone.Keith and Charlie probably don't care what old stuff they play.I think they enjoy the new stuff and tour song premiere's better.

I'm a great Keef fan...but looking at his selection of songs over the years for his two-slot does not support this view? Especially on this tour - 40 Licks was a bit more varied I'll admit

i guess chuck is telling us that UMT was a one-shot deal. too bad, i was pleasantly surprised with the way it sounded . . .

UMT in Milan was not perfectly IMO. It took me many seconds to recognize the intro.

But this is not a reason to drop it from the setlist
