1981. I love the '78 version but it's closer to the official release. Thanks to Ernie Watts adding melodic cohesiveness the song really took off in '81 and we have this great Imagination guitar jams, like the Hampton version. I think Ernie Watts was absolutely brilliant - he RULED in '81.

I love you, Greg! You saved me from writing a whole paragraph.
The 1978 versions are much better. That drum kickoff is brilliant. I also liked Mick going up on the vocal line "hear my plea."
BTW, I met Ernie Watts a few times. He used to come in my work in my retail days. I asked him about the 1981 tour and he looked me right in the eye and said "I have no fond memories of that tour." After that, I never asked him again. Nice guy, though.
ernie watts said he had no fond memories of that tour. any idea why? maybe he hated the music... did'nt they pay him good? was the atmosphere so bad? or did he get lost in the touring party? i could understand it when he would say he has no memeories of that tour at all... ronnie was at the height of his coke and basing addiction. keith drank a lot, but drugs? was mick living his healty lifestyle back then?
I like both. But maybe I'd lean towards some of the 81 versions because they really made this into a nice jam.
twanghound- Not sure exactly why Ernie said that but I read in one of Wyman's books that Mick was drinking a lot this tour, maybe doing some of the white stuff as well, Ronnie was of coarse indulging a lot. I think right around this time is when Mick began to workout but I think that really began in 82. Before that his preparation I would imagine just consisted of some whiskey (he was quoted in 75 saying it helps his singing) and maybe a few other substances, as scene in @#$%& Blues.
But why whould Ernie Watts suffer from the substance abuse from the band, I assume he had his own dressing/hotel room. I would like to know the exact story behing this. Somehting financial perhaps?
