You're all right, Daryl is a fine bass player!!

BUT!

Steve Vai is a great guitarist!! Alex Van Halen is a great drummer!! But imagine them with the Stones!!

I'm just saying, however good he may be, he doesn't fit with the Rolling Stones. He's a jazz/funk player, the Stones are a rock 'n' roll band.

She's a brilliant bassist, from the same groove school as Spampinato. Why didn't they ask the best groove bassist ever, the completely copied by Wyman himself: Donald "Duck" Dunn? He's still alive, kicking and playing!

That's a good one, Mathijs!! Dunn is great indeed. And a real character, just like all the other Stones. One of a kind. He should have gotten the job.

I think they have been quite clear about this. Charlie had to decide, and picked one that suited him the best. He tried a few, and was happy with Jones. Which is not strange, seen from Charlies angle, but could be considered less obvious from the Stones angle.

But even then, I think he plays great, I enjoy what he does.

Certainly Darryl is an execellent bass player. Seeing him with Tim Pries was really an experience. You could see that he's a bass player from the heart. And during soundcheck he played the bass straight from the notes that Tim handed over to him.

But IMHO he's not the right bass player for the Stones.

redeye, I neither like that walking bass in Midnight Rambler, nor did I like the thumbing on YCAGWYW.

And sure Bill plays mainly with his thumb, but that's a totally different style.

Donald "Duck"Dunn!, yes would also be a good choice.
Speaking about Clapton, anybody got the new Expanded "Eric Clapton" 2cd?
Highly recommended. Great sound and a truckload extra's.

I think they hired Darryl Jones because they felt bad about what they did to Brian, so they hired one of his long lost relatives.

Darryl - my take is that he can be fine on some songs, namely ones he they've done that they never got to do live w/Wyman. Case in point - "Monkey Man" - I think his funk/jazz/groove background lends itself to that song. Other songs like, say, "Start Me Up" - he doesn't sneakily weave his way around Charlie the way Bill would and I miss that. But I never had a problem w/him. Wasn't the most profound choice, but he was never the worst choice in my opinion. He plays as well as he can, given the circumstances. Can you really say the same thing for, say, Keith and Ronnie?

Donald "Duck" Dunn is fantastic. Would have been a very interesting choice.
