I don't think it was expected. Maybe it was to family and friends, but certainly not to fans. I mean, the guy has lived as absolute recluse for years. Has his exact cause of death been published? I don't think you just die of diabetes. Not a lot is known about Barrett, so maybe he's been seriously ill for a while?
Wow. Very, very sad. Always wondered if he would ever go into the recording studio again, but I guess not. . . . wish I had one of those 350 Genesis books he signed.
Last week I saw Roger Waters perform entire Dark Side Of The Moon and a bunch of classic Pink Floyd songs among them "Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun" with wonderful Syd Barret projections.

at one time syd barrett was the world to me, i loved his music and the aura around his history (as tragic as it was at times). he managed to capture an element of childhood in his music while still making it seem cool and ahead of its time. i really feel some how you can hear his unconscious mind in his music. the songs he wrote were like nothing else, and (though this could be said since the early 70s) the music world is now a little less for missing him. rest in peace syd-
A number of years ago, the BBC did a story on him. At the end of the story he walked off into the Fog. I will never forget that. I think I taped it and will look for it when I get a chance.
Goodbye cruel world I'm leaving you today Goodbye Goodbye Goodbye Goodbye all you people There's nothing you can say To make me change My mind Goodbye.
thank you for your music
----------------------------------------------------- Oh, give me the beat, boys, and free my soul I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away
In a strange coincidence on the day he died my best friend (the girl I love) and I attended the Roger Waters show in Rotterdam. I liked Shine On You Crazy Diamond so much it (almost) brought a tear to my eye.
In a thread lately someone asked what would be played at your funeral. Shine on is on my list now.
thank you for everything, syd. early floyd had a huge influence on my music, rivaling and sometimes surpassing even the stones' pull.
yes, i'm thi-iii-iii-iii-iii-nking of- (music stops) -uh, look, can we do it again?
the black and green scarecrow was sadder than me but now he's resigned to his fate and that's not unkind he doesn't mind. he stood in a field where barley grows....
