OT: Your nomination for Rock's very greatest Rhythm Section....
Posted by: BornOnTheBayou ()

I have a hard time not nominating....

Chad Smith & Flea Balzary of the Chili Peppers....

Jim Gordon & Carl Radle gotta come in real close though... (for steadiness they are just unmatched. The perfect compliment to a brilliant blues rock guitarist)

... honorable mention to Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, and Bill Kreutzmann... (built for anthems and long jams)

There is but one. 2nd Darryl & Charlie.
Note Keiths importance rhythm-wise.
In a broader sence I wanna mention Sly & Robbie.

Williams/Rudd and Malcolm Young on rhythm guitar for AC/DC. They are so tight and locked in it's insane. Of course, it's easy to be tight when you've been playing the same 20 songs for 20 years.

Levon Helm and Rick Danko should be considered for sure...

I can't believe that no-one has mentioned Al Jackson and Duck Dunn of the Stax band (and Booker T and the MGs), or any of the Motown Funk Brothers - James Jamerson and Bob Babbitt on the bass, and William Benjamin, Uriel Jones and Richard Allen on the drums. These people are the definition of groovy.

As for more modern times - Reni and Mani of The Stone Roses, without a doubt.

DD:

Alright DD. Booker T and the MG's came to my mind immediately.

But I must agree with the loyalists: they're not flashy, but there's a REASON the Stones sound special and it's not just Keith's tuning - Charlie and Bill, and now Charlie and Daryl.

Charlie is amazing live if you hear him in an arena - it's incredible that he can still pop it the way he does.

I second that nomination. Al played on all the great Al Green albums. Nothing flashy, but defines the word "tight".

Fleetwood and "Mac" are something special.
Even if you're not too fond of various incarnations of the band in front of them...these guys swing.

I agree there, but I'd throw out Dunaway/Smith and Williams/Rudd abd replace them with Ringo/Macca (If that's rock) and Charlie/Darryll.

For drive and thunder, Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee are very good.

Last night I saw Blue Cheer at CBGB. The guitarist (not the original) was negligible, and they didn't have any original songs worth mentioning, but the bassist/singer and drummer--the original 60s guys--got into terrific grooves during the instrumental passages. They're touring a lot this year; I'd recommend them.

Macca / Ringo would be a joke to mention...

Bootsy Collins/ Clyde Stubblefield.
James Jamerson/ Uriel Jones.
IMO these are real rhythm sections where they play as one. Many bands feature a bassist and drummer who ahve been together for a,ong time but will never achieve this synergy.
But the greatest to me is one of the reasons I'm here" Bill Wyman/ Charlie Watts. No doubt!

No. They rock. Listen to Long Tall Sally and you'll know what I mean.

How involved was Bill Wyman in the construction of Stones songs ??? ... did he design the bass lines or was he basiccally told how to play them... ?

How many stones bass lines seem "designed" to you?

Well, in my experienced ears - and I've been around for 48 years - the ultimate rhythm section is Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts. And if I live to see 100, I probably will never hear anyone who can take their throne. Yes! Bill and Charlie! I miss Bill's wall of bass...
