Maybe this is going to annoy a lot of you but its a matter of opinion after all, dont you think ?
I myself think that Phil Collins is great on percussions. Ok he may not be very high standard for you guys but given my age I dont know as many talented musicians as you guys do.

I agree about your definition, but all (or most) names listed so far are percussionists sitting behind a drumkit. I just wanted to add some names of musicians who are known for playing congas, shakers, etc.

I'm pretty sure that's Ray Cooper... u either like him or don't.

Hey Bayou and Koen...I saw Ray Cooper performing with Elton John on November 8, 1974. He was a funny character. I was just 15 at the time but I remember he really was hamming it up on stage. (not as much as Elton was of course)
Sticking broadly speaking to 'rock': Charlie Watts Ziggy Modeliste (Meters) Keith Moon Earl Palmer Kenny Jones (Faces) Carlton Barrett (Wailers) Sly Dunbar (overall, but check out his work on Grace Jones' "Compass Point Sessions") Tony Thompson (Chic) Gregg Errico & Andy Newmark (Sly Stone, & also Ron Wood in AW's case) Maureen Tucker (Velvets) Ringo (Beatles natch, & w/ John on POB, & Yoko on POB & Fly) Francis Clay (Muddy in the 50s, etc) ...So, having drummed a bit myself, I admire drummers with a distinctive musical personality more than virtuosity - not that they're mutually exclusive, but players with a stamp that you recognize as soon as you hear them. And there are loads I've left out, natch.
