Winter & Chelsea - Nice to see someone who knows who Bill Nelson is..

As for his works - the Be Bop Live album is better than the BBC CD that was
recently released. If you can find it, listen to: Shine - love that song,
Along with Adventures...

My favorite Be Bop albums were: Modern Music, Sunburst Finish & Futurerama
find those if you can, maybe thru Bill's Webpage. He play's around England
from time to time...

Saw them (3) times when they toured thru the States, back in the 70's..
excellent!!

thanks for the suggestion. i only lucked out hearing the live lp because we had a radio station in pittsburgh (WYDD?) that would play entire new lps at midnight. i went out and bought it the next day (live in the air age) and have loved it ever since. i feel fortunate to have happened across that broadcast because i have never ever heard them on the radio or even mentioned by friends in the 27 years since. i got the new comp a month ago and the studio stuff on it doesn't come close, but i'll give it another go. glad you and chelsea got to experience them live. anything worth chasing down with red noise or solo? i tried some solo outings but they were more texture-oriented than godly guitar.

why substitute Buddy Guy, for Mick Taylor ? Buddy's a solid journeyman player, Mick Taylor is a genius... IMO of course.

This is nonsense...

Listen to Derek & the Dominoes LIVE at the Fillmore. Duane Allman, rest his soul, was dead by that time. It's just "Crapton" on guitar in a QUARTET, no 2nd guitar at all... if you can find a better single-album (double actually) of guitarwork that D&D Live, let me know what it is.

On the subject of unique guitarists, anyone ever heard an Aussie (think he's australian) sort of blues-rocker by the name of Dave Hole ? that dude can play anything... incredible slide too.

He tours on the blues club lunchpail circuit but definitely is a major league guitarist. Saw him one night doing a blues medley and for good measure rips into Hendrix' Foxy Lady in midstream. Worth a listen if he's touring near you.

Here's a link to a site about his discography:

UPDATE!, lol... I no sooner mention this guy than I find his website and lol and behold he's just starting an American tour in 3 days, starting at Buddy Guy's no less... also doing Europe in a couple months

Here's the tour schedule:

And reviews link from Guitar World, Blues Review, Vintage Guitar, Blues in Britain, Guitar One, Blues Access, Living Blues, Guitar Shop, Jazz Times, Jazz & Blues Magazine, DownBeat, Guitar Player, Billboard, Guitar World, The Musician, etc :

Kirk Hammett (Metallica) ".......and Dave Hole - his slide playing kills me."
READERS POLL - "BEST SLIDE GUITARIST" category - JOINT 3rd. PLACE. "GUITAR PLAYER", U.S.A. (JANUARY, 1994).

My main gripe with Dave is that he's LOUD... just from memory he didn't have as impressive slower-blues work, but that's an ancient memory, could be totally wrong but there's no doubt this guy is loud.

Winter,

If you liked Be Bop, stay away from Red Noise, that's when Bill decided he didn't want to be a Guitar God anymore and went: Techno...

He's back to at least playing his guitar these days and at times you get
little bits of Be Bop mixed in here & there..

Some of his studio work is quite excellent & original!!

Sunburst Finish & Modern Music!!!

How in the &^%$#@ does Stevie Ray qualify only for an "honorable mention" on any list of "top 10 guitarists" ??? Let alone Johnny Winter or Eric Clapton or even Mick Taylor.

IMO you can easily remove: Knopfler, Santana, Beck, Atkins, Robertson, BB, and honestly even Allman to make room for "true top tenners" smiling smiley

Born,

I don't know how how I chose the ones I chose except to say that it has to do, not only with cool licks, but also originality and influence, as well as how these guys as guitarists make the song better. Obviously, my opinion is just that ---

As for Stevie and Johnny -- I wouldn't have listed them if I didn't think they were awesome. After all, I'm from Austin. I saw Stevie a couple of dozen times before he ever made a record.

Yeah, but if you SAW Stevie, how in the &^^%%$ can you exclude him from the top ten ?? Man he was the most "sit up and take notice" guitarist I ever saw... prolly the most amazing MUSICIAN on any instrument.

at least remove chet atkins, robbie robertson, jerry garcia and replace with stevie, clapton and winter.i'd replace keith with mick taylor. why would remove knopfler, santana, jeff beck and duane allman?

Well there's no way I remove Jerry Garcia from the Top Ten... imagine Knopfler or Beck or anyone else trying to fill Jerry's shoes....

He's a top ten for about the last 30 years.

I love Hanoi Rocks. Was fortunate enough to meet Andy McCoy recently. He was cool as hell. Lovely guy. I told him I wanted to see Hanoi Rocks back in 84 but was too young to get in. He said "why didnt you just ask for me..., Id have got you in...."

How can Jerry Garcia be replaced in the Top Ten? He's so much more unique a guitarist than almost anyone on the list. Who else did 18 minute, 25 minute jams ROUTINELY year after year ?

You don't have much of a Top 100 then... have you ever listened to the Grateful Dead or attended a concert ??

I just don't get it.
I don't have to like every single guitarplayer that is respected. I have my own taste.
Jerry Garcia, Frank Zappa and others know how to play the guitar, but I just don't like it.
Even Jimi Hendrix. Marvelous technique, and I do like his playing, but I just think there are better ones. 'Better ones' might be the wrong words... I prefer other ones.

You prefer Jerry Garcia, well I think Mick Ronson (example) is better. Live with it.

Re: Top 10 guitarist

Hmmmm...the idea is great - though obviously you can't list guitarists like 100 meters runners....

Therefore any list is individual and possible even changes from day to day within the same person.

Therefore I just don't get all these negative vibes just because somebody thinks Jerry Garcia is shit-hot (I love the man - if for nothing else his command of totally different styles - the playing not the clothes *lol*) and others don't even list him in the top 100. So what?

Seems like some people have nothing better to do than putting other people down - it just makes for very bad vibes...let's accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative, folks!! ;-)

Here goes:

Keef Riff Hard
Jerry Garcia
Ry Cooder
Mick Taylor
Robbie Robertson
Robert Johnson
Muddy Waters
Duane Allman
Elmore James
Neil Young
Billy Gibbons

Or, it's probably simpler than that... you're not a Grateful Dead fan to any extent.... so the Dead's music never meant much to you, and the obvious most brilliant musican amongst the stellar lineup with the Dead was Jerry Garcia...

But you don't care for their music so who cares...

I can live with that...

BTW, How often do you put on a Mick Ronson CD, i'm curious...

Bill Nelson is a master craftsman.
Last saw him play at The Stuart Adamson Tribute Concert @ The Barrowland in '02.
He was great.

How on earth is Ronnie on so many lists here and not Brian? Brian had done much more for rock/blues guitar than Ronnie. Wood is just a clone of Keith and Brian, actually . . .

Explain that to me. He was a great overall artist and musician, with a lot of style too, but his guitar playing was far from revolutionary. Nothing wrong with it, but, Ronnie's work, however, with the Faces, and the Stones in the 70's, THAT was ROCK!!

Sad to say my list misses Clapton as well as
Brian Robbo Robertson; Scott Gorham, Gary Moore, Eric Bell,
Mark Knopfler, Cisse Häkkinen & Albert Järvinen
and even Johnny Thunders. Top 10 aint enuff.

Brian's incorporation of bottleneck guitar into rock was HUGELY revolutionary. His blistering slide solo on I Wanna Be Your Man set the rock world on fire in 1963.

If memory is correct, (which is always questionable), didn't Stevie Ray Vaughan tour with Bowie also ? If so, does Stevie play on any of Bowie's studio stuff ? (or live for that matter).
