I've always wondered - what are those circles that are on the stage? I seem them in this photo, and I remember seeing them in the Four Flicks documentary
There weren't any special effects with that stage, at least not on the night I saw them...my guess is the cicles allow some of the heat in the area beneath the stage where some people are to rise out...
By the way, in my humble view, the wood flooring of that stage was in very good taste (without distracting from the rock n' roll)!

>>Why would they place monitors in the middle of the stage?!<< Because that would be a great idea. you wouldn't have to climb over wedges and cables. the backline of amps needn't be blasting at full volume, deafening anyone near it. the overall sound on stage could be controlled.
I always thought the circles were drains that were there in case of rain,at least on the last couple of stages. It looks like there are quite a few of them on that particular stage.Unless they are on an all arena tour like 1999,I believe they use parts of the stadium stage for the indoor arena shows.
inopeng - do you see yourself anywhere in the photos? I wish I had pix from Chicago '81. Mick wore my scarf during YCAGWYW, on the first night, and then ran it between his legs the next night during Start Me Up.
3Dteafoe - was my request that obvious? To answer your question, yes, in the 3rd one you posted. I had the first seat on the side at the tip of the stage on Keith's side. In other words, I was about 5 seats down from the beginning of the front side row. If only that photo could be zoomed...
In '81, I had the first seat in the back right next to the loading ramp and was able to see them before and after the show...what a mind blowing experience for this then-20 year old! The seat was also at the lift and during Beast of Burden Keith walked right up to me, slouched down, played right in front of my face (his guiatar about two feet from me), then winked at me and walked away. I'm still hoping to someday track down a photo from that show.
My highlight for the B2B shows at the U.C., from memory now, was Like a Rolling Stone from the b stage... a pluperfect rendition, very fitting the band.

In response to the last two questions, Mick was drinking Becks and that stage was only used for the last few shows of the BTB tour, all of which were in indoor arenas - MSG, United Center in Chicago, and I think in Montreal. Those shows also served as the testers for the new, sky-high ticket prices to come in the No Security tour less than a year later.
Thanks for posting those great pix, Rockman. inopeng, what date did you attend the '81 shows? They played a few nights that late November. I might have a few pics from one of the concerts that I aquired on ebay. (Mostly band close-ups.) I wish I could get a decent enlargement of the third pic, but as I was in the upper tier, it's not very sharp. Nonetheless, I could still send you a print or large file.
I was there on the first night and third (last) night which I think was on a Thursday. It was the last show where I had that cool seat. Any help would be appreciated and I'm going to your website right now!
Funny Lukester...actually, can you believe that of 34 Stoes shows I've only been high once! It was the festive April '99 show at United Center and someone handed a joint to me...I still regret it because I can't remember I Got The Blues clearly enough! (Someone at the other end of the section offered some H to another friend of mine...he passed on it)
aw come on, inopeng you can be honest with us....we're your friends here. (smile)
Actually I respe......whoa, did you just say someone offered your friend some "H," as in heroin???? That is nucking futs!!!!......actually, I respect your answer. Me? I don't think I've ever been to a concert and NOT been stoned. But that's just me. I still pride myself in remembering lots of details from concerts. However, lots of alcohol can mess with my memory chips.
I remember seeing the "for the record" documentary, I dont own it, but it has a clip of Mick and Muddy Waters singing together in Chicago in 81. It was at a club after one show. very cool stuff.
