Stripped - Wild horses version......
Posted by: Fan Since 1964 ()

I rank this version the best ever done
by the Stones.

Keith's guitar is superb and Ronnie is doing
a great job on his. Mick is singing like he
just wrote the song, really beautiful.
Backing vocals is lovely.
Charlie of course is laying down the rythm
as nice as ever.
Bassline is better then ever.

They're playing this one like it was a new born child.
Very beautiful!

What's your opinion on this one?

Been Stoned since 1964 and still am!

Me Agree. I also think Angie on Stripped is the best version of that song too.

Keith's guitar has got to be one of the most beautiful uses of the Open G tuning.

"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."

Yes, it's Keith open-G that does Wild Horses on Stripped.
And Daryll ads some more groove to it too.

Angie has in the other way lost some of the feeling, I think.
I don't like the change in the rythm (during 'where will it lead us from here')

Wild Horses live at Copacabana was very good!

completely agree. pure magic. it was no easy to make better than the original, but they did. I often wrote that thread in the past. then, it's a good idea to put it on rarities.

I never truly loved it (because of Mick's overaffected singing) until I heard it on Rarities. I don't know what happende then. The thing sounds different! Anyway, I agree, Keith makes this one. He literally "sings" the melody with his guitar!

it's good - but not as good as the Sticky Fingers version. (it's hard to outdo perfection, you see)

The song was never better than on Stripped - superior to the studio version, by far, if you ask me!

I was talking about the performance, not necessarily about the quality of the recording.

The version from St. Louis 1997 could be the best ever. Best guitar and best backing vocals by Keith. It's too bad Dave Mathews guest appeared on that performance.

"make up your mind, 'cause I gotta go"

IMO, everything on WH is better on Stripped, except for Mick´s singing, which is good, but nowhere near the original. Keith´s playing on WH Stripped is fantastic.

I go for the original version, Keith uses an Am7, instead of Am.....and he uses D/F# instead of D on the Stripped-version of Love In Vain.
Sounds like a small thing, but it gives the songs a more jazzy, not-so-heartfelt vibe.....which these 2 songs deserve.
The "hard" drums on the studio version is also better than the wasp-drumming on Stripped.....these are songs that should not have a compromise-attitude.
Then again, this might be one of them lamp posts.

imo stripped is one of their best albums

Yes, it's really good. I'm not bashing it.

It's a great version. My only problem with the Stripped version is MJ changing the penultimate closing line from "...after we die" to "...after love dies." A minor quibble, but a quibble nonetheless.

it's great but i mean sticky fingers version it's really amazing. Speaking of stripped, i love that but there's no one song in that that is better than the original IMO.

I like the originals a lot more.
Actually I could do without Stripped anytime.

so the fact that its a fine version makes it a good excuse to put it on Rarities even though it was taken from an album that sold 3.5 million copies??

Using that logic, I suppose they should have included the studio version of Jumpin' Jack Flash on Rarities as well...

Gazza, I completely gave up questioning the Stones' decisions nowadays...these are corporate, but no artistic decisions. "Rarities sampler? Uuh, good idea. Might ship some quantities. But, wait a minute, wee need some well-known titles on it, otherwise it's aimed too much at these hardcore fans, so it won't sell that much. Who knows Think I'm Going Mad, The Storm, So Young and the like? Need some household song titles like...Wild Horses...no rarity at all, but who cares? The mainstream buyers won't notice it's from Stripped....".

Et voilà, once again, here's a product that's not meat nor fish.

i always thot it wud have been cooler if the Stripped version had just been Mick & Keith (like it starts out)....once the band kicks in, it just becomes a pale imitation of the original....missed opportunity, imo.....

I agree. It is a great version of WH. I remember reading somewhere that Charlie rated the sessions for Stripped (in Japan) among the best playing the stones had ever done.

It's a good version,I wouldn't say its the best. This song works really well live. The version from Durham last year was excellent - have to mention the Voodoo Lounge versions and the '76 version as well.
