'72 the Stones loaded up the greatest rock tour ever and for good measure the Dead hit their touring peak as well. Pretty much the answer to any question regarding the greatest year is answered by a simple "1972" response....

I'd say 1969 off the top of my head.
Woodstock comes to mind.
And Hendrix, Doors, Zep, The Who, Cream, Stones, etc., and many others!
I was only 6 years old at the time, and unfortunately couldn't make any of these shows.

Looking at the prices I would say between 1990 and 1995.

Nirvana were great in 1991-1994, Stones; 1964-1978. Beatles were great in 1969 on the rooftop. And in 1961-1962. Jimi Hendrix 1969. Ill go with 1969. I was great in 1995. Larsa was ok in 1992 and brilliant in 1998.

That was the year that first popped into mind when I saw this thread ... you also had The Who and Zeppelin pretty much at the height of their powers in that year as well.

Yeah 1969 and 1975 come to mind too from a historical point of view. But for me, it's 2006. I saw Alvin Youngblood Hart(something like that, anyway), which was great. I saw Eric Clapton, which was fantastic. Yesterday I was frontrow at Europe's best blues band(excluding the UK), Julian Sas! There weren't even fences between the crowd and the stage. The guy almost kicked me in the face(he has that kind of Keith-like kick thing). It was LOUD. He was inches away from me taking solo's. I'd seen him 3 times before but this was the best show yet, without doubt. And, ofcourse, I will (hopefully) be seeing one of the few not postponed Stones shows!

71 to 72... the Grateful Dead was at their zenith, The Stones had MT on lead, Mountain was incredible, Yes, the Who, Derek & the Dominoes, Jefferson Airplane, Frank Zappa, Jethro Tull, the Allman Brothers, Creedence, CSN&Y, Rod Stewart, they were all playing then.

And what made it "doubly great" was that a front row ticket to a Stones gig cost around 10 bucks!

I always think about 78 in terms of great concerts. Stones, Bowie, Dylan, Springsteen were on top, and had big tours.
Of course 69-73 is top years when it comes to RS.

Yea, but the maestro (Bob) had a break in those years,
Eric Clapton were lost on H, Bowie hadn't reach his peak, Jimi Hendrix had just dies - same goes for Jim Morrison, Springsteen hadn't started for real,
and Elvis hadn't continued his promising 68-comeback - he went to Las Vegas instead.
Quite a few sad factors.

78

Great tours (and new albums) by my 3 favourite artists - Stones, Springsteen and Dylan - shit, Neil Young's "Rust never sleeps" tour was bloody good too!

(edit : good tour by Bowie in '78 too as pointed out earlier....just bought the remastered version of 'Stage' on CD a few days ago...terrific album..hadnt listened to my vinyl copy in years)

Elvis toured constantly every year from 1970 until his death. Some seem to suggest he did little else but play Las vegas all the time. Its a bit of a myth to be honest. he usually did a couple of seasons a year for a month at a time (which were less frequent and shorter from 1975 on) but he spent more time on the road than in Vegas. He was still at the top of his game as a live performer in 1971-72 too!
